Moving on

Hi all

After having tested my memory with memtest and replacing the power supply, my system still got random 'file missing' and Screen-of-Death errors. Then, it would not even power up for more than 3 seconds. I assume my mobo
has gone for good.

My specs:
ASUS a7n8x dx
AMP Athlon 2500+ XP Mobile (Barton)
1GB Corsair 3200LLC Twinx
ATI Radeon 9800
A broken 80GB WD 8MB IDE Drive
48x Lite-ON CD/RW

I decided to move on and want to buy a new mobo/chip.
Can you guys help me find the biggest bang for the buck,
helping me reuse my parts above?

My budget is about 300 dollars.

disconnect ALL drives & power up into the BIOS... if you can reach bios & its doesnt crash, its more likely the HDD...

if its the Mobo, do you want a Athlon64 system or just a new mobo for your current CPU ???

Personally if U go 64 bit, make sure its Socket 939... more life in that line than the 754...

Well, before I replaced the power supply, I took out
the IDE drive I thought was troublesome and put in
a sata/150.
First all was good, soon didnt recognize it or have
random crashes again. So I thought it was the power supply.
But then that... So, really, moving on...

You think I can get a Athlon64 and Mobo under 300 bucks?
What models are you thinking of?

u can get them for just over 300. the k8n neo2 platinum on pricewatch is about 135 and the A64 is about 194 also on price watch

I looked at the K8N Neo2 Platinum (939) and I liked
it. It is around 130 bucks and now I need a A64 proc
for less than 170. Researching on...

u can find the A64 3000 OEM for 150 and retail for 170 approximately.

Yep, I couldn't resist. Bought the
Neo2 Platinum (939) and the
A64 3000+ 939 90 RT (implies Winchester core)
for under 300 bucks. That was easy. Thank you all
for getting me started again.

Replacing the a7n8x-dx and the Barton 2500+ Mobile,
this will be my future config (not overclocking this time):

Antec TruePower 430
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Audio/GB-LAN/USB/IEEE/SATA/DDR-
400/ATX 64 (939)
CPU AMD 64 |3000+ ATHLON 939P 90 RT
DDRAM 1GB TWINX1024-3200LL COR RT
Radeon 9800 64MB (good enough for cs-cz?..!)
Disk dependant on outcome. (Hoping secretly to find money for a sata/150)

Can anyone give me pointers to whether this
will work and how well? How about tuning, what are the general considerations? I am sure there is a sticky somewhere...

It's a little cheeper, and there have been a few issues with the msi board.
