I am planning to update my current machine with an 8600k and a z370 mobo and was wondering, is there a way to move programs from my boot drive over to my new machine without also bringing motherboard drivers?

Solution

No, for multiple reasons.

1. New motherboard etc may (but not always), require a clean install.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails completely. Prepare for if it fails.

2. You can't just more "programs" like that.

3. Assuming Windows 10, Read and do this before you change any parts:

Actually if you plan to just keep the hard drive and reuse it there's a good chance it'll just work. Windows 10 is much better at this than previous versions of windows. However there is the potential for it to fail or to have ongoing stability issues so a fresh install is better. I'd suggest just backing up anything important in case of catastrophic failure and just trying it.

There's also an issue getting windows to reactivate on new hardware if you only have an OEM software licence. Tieing your OS to a MS online account can help transfer the activation - but it's not 100% guaranteed to work.
