MSI GTX 970 vs EVGA GTX 690 (Used)

Okay so I'm planning my first build and after alot of reading and hair pulling I've got an blueprint. But after searching a few online secondhand selling sites I've come across a EVGA GTX 690 for 340$ wich could be a wonderful deal or a pretty big mistake.

Any advice and past experiences with buying secondhand GPUs?

I will be using an I5 4690k and asus 7 hero

I'd be leery of the 690, they came out almost 3 years ago

Looks cool indeed but, ofcourse, get the GTX 970. The reference model of the 970 is also quite slick.
