I've used many MSI Gaming X graphics cards in past ~2 years, including 1080 Gaming X, 2060 Gaming X, 2080S Gaming X, 2080Ti Gaming X/Z, 3090 Gaming X and 3090 Suprim X.
I think 2000 series Gaming X models were great, all ran very cool and quite all the time and better than other high-end models like Asus Strix or Gigabyte Aorus(probably the best looking 2080Ti but worst thermal performance out of all high-end 2080Ti) or EVGA FTW3 etc.
MSI 2080Ti Gaming Z was probably my favourite card because it was the fastest stock 2080Ti thanks to much faster 16Gbps memory.
However 3000 series Gaming X models are bit disappointing compared to 2000 series Gaming X models.. because I don't think it's improved much since the 2000 series but 3080/3090 cards runs much hotter(especially 3090) than 2080Ti.
But luckily MSI released new Suprim X models for 3080/3090 and I think it's a great card, I have 3090 Suprim X atm and it runs much cooler than 3090 Gaming X and still almost silent. It also looks good, only downside is the weight of the card which makes it sag a bit so I recommend using the provided support stand. (imo you don't need to use any support bracket on other high-end MSI Gaming X models)
If I had choice to pick the 2080Ti & 3090(or 3080), then I'd pick:
2080Ti: 1. MSI Gaming Z, 2. MSI Gaming X, 3. Asus Strix, 4. EVGA FTW3, 5. Gigabyte Aorus
3090: 1. MSI Suprim X, 2. Asus Strix, 3. Gigabyte Aorus, 4. MSI Gaming X, 5. EVGA FTW3
Personally I'd pick MSI 2080Ti Gaming Z & MSI 3090 Suprim X over premium models like EVGA Kingpin or Galax HOF Anniversary Edition etc, because I prefer air cooling(not into water cooling or AIO) and I like having a simple and very quite(all air) PC system.
