Go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and create a Windows 95
version B boot floppy. This uses DOS version 7, which is sufficient for
extracting files. Use it to start the problem computer, then insert your
Windows 98 CD, type the following command line and press "Enter".
Then remove the floppy and restart.

extract /a /y /L c:\windows\system R:\win98\base4.cab MSVCRT.DLL

First thing to try is a Registry Restore. Restart your system and press
the Ctrl key as it goes through the beginning screens. With luck,
you'll get the Startup Menu. (Sometimes F8 works better, and sometimes
you need to repeatedly press the key instead of holding it down, to
avoid a "stuck key" error. When you manage to get the Startup Menu,
choose Safe Mode. In Safe Mode, run MSCONFIG from the Start\Run menu.
Choose Selective Startup, then disable the Startup Group. Click OK and
restart when prompted.

Can you now boot normally? If not, post back with that report. If you
can now boot normally, you need to go back to MSCONFIG and re-enable
everything except the specific item(s) that was or were installed with
the printer--some kind of monitoring program, no doubt. If you cannot
determine what Startup program it is that is at fault, then either
figure it out using trial and error methods, or do the following:

Start>Run>MSINFO32. Expand "Software Environment." Click on "Startup
Programs". Now click anywhere in the right-hand pane. Press Ctrl-A, then
Ctrl-C. Now open a Reply to this message and use Ctrl-P to Paste in the
contents of that list. Then Send.

Put the Windows 98 CD in the computer you are using now and extract the
"MSVCRT.DLL" from it to a floppy. WinZip can handle cab files. Try
looking in the "win98_63.cab" file in the "Win98" folder. Then start the
problem computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu
appears and select "Command Prompt". Insert the floppy with the
replacement file, type
"copy /y a:\MSVCRT.DLL c:\windows\system"
and press "Enter". Then remove the floppy and type "win" to start
Windows.

And I'm *very* sorry that my advice got side-tracked--I didn't tell you
how to restore the Registry but instead jumped to the next portion,
leaving out the crucial steps.

When you get the Startup menu, choose "Command Prompt Only". Assuming
that works, when you get to the C:\> prompt, run the following commands,
pressing <Enter> at the end of each line:

SMARTDRV
SCANREG /RESTORE

There's a space in second line before "/restore". Choose the most recent
backup by time/date, not by filename. If I recall, your system went
south immediately after installing the printer? The backup would
definitely be from before that. But if it happens again, then you can
try an older backup.

When you restart after the above operation there may be errors even
though Windows now runs more or less properly. If so, then do as I
suggested previously using MSCONFIG.

Don't panic - and don't "just" re-install Windows!

First, try booting Windows into Safe Mode. If that works, then it's
something in the startup axis (that is suppressed in Safe Mode) that
is the problem, and you can use MSConfig to track that down.

If still no joy, read on...

Explorer.exe is the default shell (front end) for Windows, but it
doesn't have to be - so when it's poisoned by bad 3rd-party
integration, or just plain bent, you can use something else as shell,
get into the system, and work on it that way.

In Win9x, the shell is defined in SYSTEM.INI within your Windows
directory, and you can access that from DOS Mode (Command Prompt Only
from the F8 boot menu). Copy the shell=explorer.exe line, put a ; in
front of the first copy to ;comment it out, then change the second to
use an alternate shell, such as Taskman.exe (remember that Winfile.exe
and Progman.exe break Long File Names).

If your shell line has anything other than Explorer.exe in it, then
that's likely your problem right there - this was a common malware
tactic, to get loose standalone malware code files running in Windows.

Once in Windows, with Task Manager as shell, you can do various
things, though you have to use the Run option to do them! You can run
MSConfig and see who's who in the zoo, and refersably disable things
there in the startup. And if you download Shell Extension Viewer from
www.nirsoft.com, you can reversably disable shell integrations into
Explorer itself. Finally, kill View As Web Page, Active Desktop, and
(via IE's Tools Options Advanced) kill third-party browser
enhancements (aka the dreaded BHOs).

You could also run HiJackThis for an easy overview, but changes there
are not as easy to reverse (undo) than the ones I mentioned.
