Near water. Muck sponges are tall columnar. A lot near Gnisis and
elsewhere. If you are at the shrine, there is muck on a small island nearby
in the lake.

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I've had the game only take one (leading and
usually highest value) soul gem at Red Mountain. But since I tend
to want to give up a lower quality gem, I usually do drop the
higher value stuff ahead of the cheap gems.

There is a similar though unrelated problem with soul gems. If you want to
build a Televanni stronghold you need to capture storm atronachs in grand
soul gems (yellow circles). If you have any of tfhe lesser ones (Purple)
Greater soulgems in your inventory the storm atronach will fit in it. You
must drop all of these before you capture the atronach.
