i know have SB 128 pci

I'm using the mx300, it's a great value right now. A new review on it can be found at: http://www.rolotech.com/reviews/audio/Diamond/MX300/MX300p1.htm Aureal may have gone bankrupt but windows 2k and ME both have drivers for aureal vortex 2 cards and the win98 drivers 30.48 can be found on the web, in various places.

I have the MX300 and it works well in 98 and 2000. I like it a lot. I have the SB Live card and I sold it to buy this one about a year ago.

Whoa! OK, I have the Aureal SQ2500, same chipset, same reference drivers as MX 300. It sounds great! Now for the bad news-go to http://www.vortexofsound.com/forum.htm to find out the whole deal. Any vortex-based cards will have problems in Windows 2000, or on a Via chipset motherboard, or on an i815 based motherboard. There is a fix for the i815 issue posted in their forum, and it works good (I have my Vortex2 on an Asus CUSL2 i815e), it only requires removing a semicolon from the driver. Thought you would like to know.
Also, I would get the SQ2500, because I prefer Coaxial digital out.

I did notice in Windows 2000 that the sound gets muffled and distorted as the load increases. As windows loads and plays the start up sound the end of it is garbled. I looked at the forum you suggested but did not find this issue, only issues with non supported features. I just want my card to play audio under a load like it used to.
