Hi,
My CPU all of a sudden began to overheat quickly and seemingly without cause. I play a lot of games for long periods of time but have never had a problem before until now. My computer has blue screened a couple times and the mother board bios keeps turning it off to save itself saying the CPU temperatures were reaching up to 100 degrees Celsius. Also my computer becomes very slow and laggy when its about to crash.

I have cleaned my case of dust, ensured all 3 case fans are running and both water cooler fans are running. The water cooler plate seems to be snug and secure, the pump also appears to be running. please help as i am not sure what to do. I don't know much about computer hardware so i am hesitant to replace the thermal paste as i have never done it, my computer is not overclocked and just under a year old. The room is below room temperature around 17 degrees Celsius I would guess. Please help me figure out what is wrong and why my CPU is overheating.

CPU: intel core i7 4820k
Liquid cooling: Corsair H80i (closed loop water cooler)

From the cooler (CPU) will be 2 tubes that run to something that has a fan on it, that something is the radiator, it looks just like a miniature version of the one at the front of your car. You need to unscrew the fan (4 screws) and underneath you will find what looks like the inside of a well used vacuum cleaner.

To clean this there are a few options:
1/ if you have a vacuum with a small attachment use that from the inside.
2/ buy some compressed air and shoot from the outside to the inside.
3/ use a 1 inch paint brush to sweep the dirt out.
4/ Uninstall the cooler and run the radiator under a tap (last resort).

Have you ran a program anything like Malwarebytes or checked for updates? Did something happen to the fluid?

hi ummm i did a norton power clean and a system restore to back before i had the overheating issue, are you refering to viruses? could they cause my cpu to overheat like this?

ok, so I cleaned the radiator it had a bit of dust in it but nothing too insane and I started my computer up and initial temperatures where 45-50C then running the intel diagnostic tool all 4 cores shot up to 100C right away, is there anything else that it might be i dont think the thermal paste would be the issue as it seemed to be more of a sudden occurance

I would suggest changing out the thermal paste as I am guessing that you are still using the stock goo that came with it and there have been many cases where people take the water block of the cpu and the stock thermal past is baked on (leading to the high temps).
It's quite easy to change thermal paste :
First buy new thermal paste, I would recommend Arctic MX4, You should be able to get this of amazon or ebay for 5-10£
Next get 70% or purer isopropyl alcohol and get some cotton, tissue, or coffee filter to wipe off the old thermal paste
Then leave it for around 30 mins for the alcohol to fully evaporate (try not get any alcohol on anything but the cpu top, also dont pour the alcohol directly on the cpu, rather just wet the cotton or whatever you wil use then clean both the cpu and water block)
Then apply a drop of thermal paste directly in the middle of the cpu the size of a pea or uncooked grain of rice
Place the water block back on and tighten it down (opposite corners first)
thats about it really
If that doesn't work then you may have a faulty cpu or h80i

Hope this helps and I suggest watching a vid on youtube for how to change thermal paste

thanks I guess I'll have to change the thermal paste I had my computer custom built by a computer shop in Calgary and they did use arctic silver paste I'm pretty sure but I'll see how it turns out, played a 20 minute game of Heroes of the Storm and my cores were at 99C at 5-20% load :S

If you are getting such high temps I would strongly suggest not doing demanding things as the last thing you want is a fried cpu :)

ok so I applied new arctic mx-4 thermal paste to my cpu using a dot the size of a bb and it hasn't affected the temperatures of my CPU at all. When I checked the CPU temp in the BIOS it showed 28C and climbing quickly and 20 seconds later when I had opened Core Temp 1.0 RC it was at 45C then running the Intel Diagnostic Tool my CPU sat at 100C for the entire stress test. Could my CPU be getting too much power for some reason? at idle Core Temp shows the power is at ~13 watts and at 100% load around 64 watts I know nothing about power or voltages for computers and after cleaning my computer water cooler and applying new thermal paste the idle CPU temp is still 55-60C in a cool enviroment

Can you go into your bios and take some pics or make notes of all the voltages you can see then upload them here or give me a link so I can check if the voltages are ok

is this ok? http://postimg.org/image/5u7799xvp/ http://s14.postimg.org/sd3qltz69/photo.jpg

50c temps at 1.2ghz? thats really bad :L,
It can be three things really, Either your Pump in your h80i is not working or has slowed down a lot or the radiator is clogged with dust, your motherboards voltage regulator may be messed up (but then it would read that it is running at a high voltage, but still)
or your cpu is fkd
Try running it on your stock cooler if you have it and see if there is a difference
Anyway heres my readings, Its an i7 4790k so they will be different than any 4820k but it should give you an idea of what it everything should be around. Right now I have it running on turbo mode as 4.5ghz was just unnecessary for me so I just let it be at 4.4 ghz, I get 35c Idle (my room is like 30c) and running prime 95 I get like 70-80c.

Solution

Ok so as I don't have a stock cooler I guess I'll have to try and find a place to look at it 🙁 thanks for all your help

ay thanks for all your help turns out it was the cooling system a guy hooked me up with a stock heatsink fan for a different intel socket and just sitting it on there not even locked in with my comp horizontal temps were 40 degrees less at load. so i got a coolermaster seidon 120V liquid cooling system, and used some of the fans from the corsair H80i to get more air through the radiator and now my cpu only goes up to 40C on max load 😀

Good to hear man, lucky it wasn't the cpu 😀
