I realise there are alot of versions of linux but the more populer (you can buy it in a store) that the average user is gunna buy is slower then windows and vastly more bloted. EVERY new OS no matter what its made for slows your computer down more then the last. Seriously that argument is retarded. so once again

No, you are an idiot and you know nothing about linux. I can run any current linux distro sans-3d desktop on a system that will not run windows xp. Your argument is idiotic and uninformed.

Why do people defend something thats bad for them? Do you just feel like being contrarian? Obviously there are things that are not bad about Vista, but you cannot deny they are locking down a monopoly and making huge amounts of money off everyone. 100$ or 400$ there is nothing right about what they are doing, and its NOT even very good software. dx10 IS an api and theres no reason for it not to work on xp. However, there is also no reason not to use opengl which works on anything and looks as good or better. Before dx was the defacto standard (thanks a bunch, ms) opengl was far superior (quake 3 vs unreal tournament anyone?).

The drm arguments about it not being MS's fault are also crap-- if ms said screw you to hollywood, hollywood would have to give in. But the drm is an excuse for ms to have more control. Sure there are detractors who are idiots, but why do you put up with what is obviously not as good as it could be for you? Defeatist attitudes get no where either. I wont be buying vista because in the last year I have taught myself to be self sufficient in linux specifically so I never have to buy a microsoft os again--and I wont.

As far as DX10 goes, i hear its functionality will be ported back to XP... called DX9L.

Yeah, heard that too..But still wondering how many features of DX10 that will be ported to DX9L ie.. how how 'compatible' it would be. Are we going to miss much compared to DX10 or only by a small margin? How's current rig gonna perform in DX9L?Any improvement over DX9c?

I am pretty sure that the only way to dual boot is with the retail version. All early adopter should strongly consider that option. If your brave go for it. I run it at work, x86 most thing work with a little effort. The 64bit version with my 8800 has more issues but most surrounding what I believe to the graphic driver.

The funny thing M$ gave me a free copy of Office 2007 Pro, Vista Business and what I believe is a free version of 32bit Ultimate, haven't istalled yet. All free to anyone who was paying attention and willing to give up some time.

After using it for a while I'm not sure it's worth the cost to upgrade but I enjoy using it much more that XP. Once testing is completed I will likely recommend it for deployment. In fact our next order PC's will be ordered with upgrade voucher because I am confident that it will reduce our support cost.

All of ranting seem out of line unless you're actually used the product.

sorry to say man but you sound like you just got paid by MS to do viral advertizing XD

"not like there is a big difference between dx9 and 10, yet... i"

Have you even been reading anything about DX10?

THERE IS SUCH A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO!

First and most important is, Stream processors and Geometry Shaders, These did not exist until DX10 and DX10 Graphics card.

Instead of me telling why DX10 and Crysis is going to be the &^*#
Why not let THG guide do it?

from what ive read, isnt vista a complete overhaul? i dont think its just a rehashed version of xp.

you see, the last time microsoft made a major OS change, i was stuck using a mac and didnt notice. however, im assuming that there were people bitching then about having to go from 2000 to xp, just as there are people bitching about having to go from xp to vista now.

when its all said and done, within a year every enthusiast on this forum will be using windows vista. thats my prediction.

No it is not. It was supposed to be, down to replacing the NFTS file system, but microsoft was unable to work enough of the bugs out of the new file system, so they shitcanned it for vista.

In short, and not entirely accurate, but close enough for government work, Vista is to XP as ME was 98, with a few additions including the $$$ people will shell out for it.

Youre the consumers, you do have the power----send MS the message---dont buy it. If enogh people dont buy it, MS will get the message.

Spread the message

Who cares about Linux? You're not going to play Crysis on Linux. This is the graphics forum, and a lot of us are here because we play computer games and we have graphics cards that run on Windows drivers. This whole thread is pretty retarded if you ask me. If you're an enthusiast, you'll be switching to Vista whether you like it or not, so deal with it. I'll stick with XP until I build a new system.

Gayleon: My radical views on business are not accepted by most but thats ok, I'm not posting for support. I just think that America in general has gotten way out of hand

I see. In other words, you are a 14-year-old kid that doesn't understand something called "private property rights". When you (ahem) grow up, you might think differently.

Here's the bottom line: you don't like Windows? Don't like Microsoft? Then make a voluntary, personal economic choice and don't buy Vista. It's not that terribly difficult.

Or, you could use Linux and pat yourself on the head for how "smart" you are for using an OS that practically nothing is written for and no one cares about.

Linux fanboys are worse than Mac fanboys, and both are completely pathetic.

My point was Micosoft was bragging about the number of people who upgraded to the new IE. What they didn't say in that article was that it is an automatic download that you got if you have that feature turned on. So a very large percentage of people got it automatically, not because they seeked it out purposely and installed it, as MS would like to have you believe. 80% of the people who installed IE7 probably had no idea why or how they got it. Most of them have no idea that you can even turn the auto-update feature off.

EXACTLY. Microsoft is using its monopoly to push new products thru Windows Update. I'm not understanding why the DoJ or anyone else for that matter isn't up in arms. I guess Mozilla doesn't have the legal resources to pursue it... but regardless what M$ is doing with IE7 is fcuking wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. It's so damned anti-trust it makes me sick!

Or maybe an IT professional concerned about lowering his support cost. As a side note I also like to provide information from my point of view. I would encourage everyone to try it out before you ranting about something. I was quite skeptical before I started testing and using it. As a gaming platform it will likely suck for some time for those of us with Nvidia cards.

Beside I don't think M$ would be happy with their investment with an endorsement like I don't think it worth upgrading to.

There's no upgrade to ultimate and in Australia it will cost $750 out money which equates to just under $600 US Dollars........so I can't see it available for $200 anywhere.

That must be the OEM price.

microsoft fanboys are even worse. i know you didnt ask, but let me tell you why.

microsoft owes its position in the marketplace due to the fact that it engaged in anti-competitive behavior. bill gates owes his wealth also to this fact.

point in case microsoft co-developes an open api, like farenheit (a corroboration between sgi and ms for a 3d graphics standard.) they make sgi spin thier wheels for a couple years then back out. use what they learned to created direct3d and lobby game developers to use thier api over opengl.

microsoft has so much money to throw around that it can buy out any interesting new technology, sometimes it is released as a windows exclusive, and sometimes its simply panned to limit competition. as a whole the ms corporation has limited innovation more than any technical roadblocks have.

then they have the gall to donate money to developing nations in terms of units of the windows operating system in a way to lock them into thier proprietary text and other bullshit formats. then they quote the amount that the licenses wouldve cost, and call it philanthropic.

there is also made the bill and melinda gates foundation, that does invest a considerable amount of money, but the fact is that he wouldnt have that money to donate had justice been surved on his anti-trust suits. that money would still be in everyones pockets.

also game developers would be developing on, and FOR linux and there wouldnt be an issue.

so you know whats worse than linux and mac fanboys. ms supporters, because they are destroying this industry step by step and fools like you defend them.

Ya all fucken gay and get over the fact the ms will always win, ya fucken try hard emos online. bitching bitching bitchin. fucken dick heads get a life

I heard everything of this was FUD..
there wont be directX 10 for XP..
directX9L will be the backwards compatibility for directX9 under vista, since the main api that will run primarly, will be directX10, so they have to load dX9 as a diferent library for compatibility with older games.
(Id have to find that guru3d post about some information leaks from microsoft about this )

yeah that "nothing" that as actually quite a few millions of fans and programmers. and halluva who knows how many server systems.

ahh the point is im not spending 400 dollars for a bloody dx upgrade. thats pretty much what vista is to me.

they try to explain in marketing speak why dx10 wont run on anything but vista, its all a bogus load of bs. its just an api, its not like were asking them to port it to linux. they claim to support xp until 2014, well what about directx.

not like there is a big difference between dx9 and 10, yet... im sure there will be eventually, but it basically killed gaming on xp artificially, like carmack bitched about in that interview with game informer.

im real sick of the people who still support them and are like ahh well yea vista is not so good but im sure it will improve. bla bla bla.

its still the nt kernel right? great big deal. glx/beryl is an addon to x that does the same ****, i mean theres binary packages for it. so in 6 years all microsoft actually managed to do was to make a new theme for windows, and rewrote dx apparently and claim that its a vista exclusive arrghhghg

Directx9L is Vistas equivalent of Directx 9 not Xp's version of Directx10

I'll just throw this out there...

If I remember correctly a few months ago M$ claimed they had no time-table to release service-pack 1 for Vista..

Most companies and people.. well, we all know that if SP1 isnt there, then run from the damn thing screaming like its the end of the world..

I remember finding an article on ZDnet, or Cnet.. one of those stating 'M$ is searching for candidates for Service Pack 1 review for Vista'

So, evidentially, someone at M$ woke up and realized that corporate customers won't move towards them without a service pack upgrade and said 'holy crap we needa make it seem like were working on one'
This isn't talking about all the rumored 'Incompatibilities' with software that companies are using.

In the end, consumers... well honestly, those huge 'Corporate Licenses' made M$ wake up for a bit. Vista has no hype, and we all see it.. heck the media is even saying that... but then again any press = good press.

I saw the Vista display at CompUSA two days ago, its a little shelf with a sign 'Vista will be here soon'. I felt... mortified. But, it was also very unimpressive.. I remember seeing Shelf after Shelf after Shelf in even Wal-Mart littered with Windows 98!

Where have all the good days gone? (cowboys wasn't fitting)

blah blah blah, let me spew more "justification" why it's ok that I pirate Windows, blah blah, anti-competitive, blah blah blah, Bill Gates, etc.

Saying that 95% of the PC world runs on Microsoft Windows isn't being a "microsoft fanboy", it's a statement of fact. I want to run all the games, thank you. No one cares about Apple, no one cares about your Linux skillz (unless you run a data server).

1. I run XP on a celeron 400 laptop with 128mb of RAM! Its very scalable!

2. I don't mind Microsoft being a monopoly, at least it makes sure that everyone can go to just about any computer and start using it, instead of having to learn 40 different OS's. And lets be fair, old Bill Gates isn't a bad old fellow, what with all his charities. If we have to have people with more money than god, sooner him, than Dick Cheney or some other evil bastard.

3. No Microsoft OS again? Fair enough, no Alan Wake for you.

There's no upgrade to ultimate and in Australia it will cost $750 out money which equates to just under $600 US Dollars........so I can't see it available for $200 anywhere.
Microsoft's site lists the MSRP for an Ultimate upgrade as US$259. Nothing in the fine print like "except for Aussies", but what do I know.

But the other thing I wonder is, how many people here really need Ultimate versus Home Premium, the full package of which costs less than the upgrade to Ultimate.

Assuming it's the Media Center -type stuff everyone is after...

Unless you have implemented Active Directory at home, there's very little reason to install Ultimate.

I'm not a Microsoft fanboy but all of this bitching is getting old.

Nobody has to get the newest version of Windows. If you want it, then buy it. If you don't, well then...

Vista is an improvement over XP, and XP is good to start with. Linux is great and so is the Mac OS. Each OS is a little better suited for one thing or another. They are also flawed in some ways - every one of them.

No offense intended towards anybody in particular but this argument reminds me of the arguments that we used to have in high school about who was the better band - Skid Row, Poison or Motley Crue. It was juvenille and the argument was unwinnable. It all comes down to taste and/or preference. And everybody thinks that they have good taste.
