im assuming that there were people bitching then about having to go from 2000 to xp, just as there are people bitching about having to go from xp to vista now.
that may be true but really had MS maintained support for both Win2kpro and WinXP pro I would have stayed with Win2k pro..... then "someone accidentally stole" all of service pack one leaving Win2K pro wide open to hackers and hacks for over a year...... wonder how that company next door to Microsoft let that happen yet still no responsibility or outcry to make the OS more secure beyond lip service. and no particular results to mention.

nothing in XP couldn't have been done on Win2k Pro MS chose to abandone 2000..... yes ppl are bitching about Vista now and they should be because not only is MS "choosing" choosing to abandone WinXP they are forcing anyone who wants to play games to play Vista or else soon they simply won't be able to play any games because no DX10 for XP.

because Microsoft is a monopoly and because the nature of the industry kills the ability for any other Operating system to gain traction due to copywrited and protected API's and the like Microsoft shouldn't be allowed to do this.... but alas Corporations know the golden rule and they hold all the gold.

I remember when the Millenium bug was soon to hit and everyone was forced to upgrade their computers globally in some form or another.... this in stark contrast to the Automotive sector where if a 10 year cars long past warranty's started having their wheels fall off or engines catch fire would be responsible along with numerous class action lawsuits and the eventual demise of the company...... not Microsoft thought the threat of planes falling out of the sky and their response was "buy a new computer and OS to avoid the issue."

Note Apple and Linux are irrelavent and only prove my point poor software support for either save in house support and limited software choices for both keep them in the toilet of sub 10% market share.

When you went from 95/98/ME to 2k/XP you needed about 2x the computer to maintain the same experience. The order of magnitude has gone up considerably.

Not even close to the same upgrade as XP->Vista

More like 95->98 OR NT4.0 to 2000Exactly. Going from NT4 to win2000 Pro was a big step up in my opinion. Tasks were streamlined, the stability was great and compared to previous OSes it wasn't much of a resource hog. It was quite nice at the time, win2k ran better than NT4 did on the same machine. No need to double my ram, upgrade to 2 faster cpus (had a dual cpu machine at the time), etc. Only a couple years ago I made the move to XP. Had MS delivered on their promises they made about Vista a couple years or so ago, it might be worth it. As it is now, I'm not looking to upgrade until XP starts being phased out. And by then I might not be at all interested in playing games or anything, so Linux or something might look nice then.

I can't remember so much promotion being done on a release for Windows before. There are quite a few radio stations doing promotions for it, "Hey we're live at Compusa, blah blah, come on down for your copy of the new Windows Vista." Even the local news is getting into the act, they did a piece on it this morning.
