I am giving my 2018 Alienware desktop computer to my sister as I recently bought a new system. I kept the gpu and hard drives for my new system, so today I installed her functional GTX 1060 GPU and her SSD into the computer. I intended to format the SSD and reinstall Windows. I power it on and there are no beep codes and everything seemingly works fine but the GPU will not output to her monitor via DVI or to her TV via HDMI.

I know all of the hardware works because I’ve tested it independently (ie her gpu and ssd still work in her computer and my cpu, mobo, psu and ram were all functional when I left my house so odds are slim they stopped working in transit.

My problem is I don’t have another gpu to use and the cpu is an i9-7900k, so there’s no integrated gpu.
I tried removing the ram, letting it hit a beep code then installing the ram, and I tried removing the cmos battery. Neither made any difference. The gpu fans spin up for about 2 seconds and then spin down as if the power was cut but everything else is still functional.

I don’t know what to do if I can’t get anything on the display and there's no iGPU. The only thing I can think of is that my Alienware previously had a 1080 installed, but since they both use the same drivers, it shouldn’t make a difference. Also, as far as I understand, you don’t need drivers to POST anyway.

Help please and thank you!

*update. If I leave the system running for approximately 20 seconds after the gpu fans stop, all of the system fans ramp up momentarily too, which seems a little strange, but might just be the system attempting to boot to Windows and then failing?

Intel never made a i9-7900K, they do however have an i9-7900x.

Might want to specify the model and SKU to the Alienware desktop.

No you don't but the TDP of both cards aren't the same. You might want to drop the GTX1060 onto a donor platform and see if the GPU is functional.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry, you’re correct. It is an i9 7900x. I was going from memory. Yes, the tdp is higher on the gtx 1080 which is the card I removed from the system and replaced with the GTX 1060. I’ve tested all hardware and it’s still functional separately.
