My high level laptop cant run Rust (urgent)

My laptop (and sometimes my desktop) seem to have trouble running games that they should be able to. This time it is Rust. I realize it is an Alpha but still, I don't understand my source of problems. I have tried optimizing my NVIDIA control panel for gaming, and turned off power saving mode. Someone please help.
Specs:
- CPU: intel i7
- GPU: NVIDIA GTX 870m
- RAM: 8gb
- OS: windows 8.1

It seems that others with similar setups can handle the game fine. And the fact that its nearly unplayable is very annoying.
