I just bought a used cpu and motherboard seperate. They are a b360 and a i5 8400. When i first plugged them in i got a black screen. After a little troubleshooting i found that the left memory slotl is not working. The motherboard i have only have 2 memory slots. My ram still lights up when connected to that memory slot. I tried reseting the bios, but no luck there. Is it a dead memory controller in my cpu or dead memory slot on my motherboard?

Welcome to the forums, newcomer!

We're going to need a little more information. When posting a thread of troubleshooting nature, it's customary to include your full system's specs. Please list them like so:
CPU:
Motherboard:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
Monitor:

Include the age of your PSU apart from it's make and model.

While you're troubleshooting the system, disconnect from the wall and display and inspect the CPU socket for any bent or broken pins.

i5-8400
asus prime b360m-k (i returned it and currently waiting for another motherboard)
crucial ballistix tracer rgb 2x8 2666mhz
asus strix gtx 970
corsair semi modular 650w (almost 3 years old)
samsung 850 evo
wd green 2tb
seagate 7200.14 2tb
cooler master 690 II
windows 10 home
asus vg248qe

I know its not the ram since they worked just fine in a i5 7400 pc build.

I believe there wasnt any bent pins in the cpu socket.

The motherboard im swapping it out with is a asus prime z370-p.
