HI,

i have recently purchased a system with the following config:

i7-7700K (not OverClocked) with intel CPU fan/heatsink (apprx $5 )
16 GB DDR4 RAM
Asus H170 -Pro Mobo
Samsung 500GB SSD + Seagate 3TB HDD
MSI 1060 GeForce GTX - 6 GB
Antec GX1200 Case
Corsair RM650x
7700K batch # L641G639

Whenever i play battlefield1, the temps are hitting 95C+ @ 4.3 GHz ( idle temps around 45C )

I also read somewhere that if delid this CPU i can get 30C lower temps (Which i really dont want to do as i fear i might damage the CPU)

im a total newbie coming to PC hardware. Pls suggest me a fix

Solution
Okay, if you've got the cpu cooler installed nice and tight and still getting temps in the 80's, lets look at your case airflow and fans. Look at your motherboard and count the sys fan headers, there should be 3 or 4. Are all your fans spinning fast when you power on the computer?
I was going to say the 212 will still give temps in the 80s, but I've heard that's under stress testing, which is about average for previous i7s with stock coolers. I guess it depends on what you're wanting. If you want to overclock, you will need something better.

I agree that if you have a tower case I wouldn't want a heavy air cooler either. I'm considering liquid cooling myself as my CRYORIG H7 doesn't allow my 4790K to operate at the voltage required for the overclock I would like.

When i buy the 7700k, ill just transfer my same water block over from 2600k to it. Same mounting brackets and all between 1155 and 1151. I could see the 7700k getting lower temps then my 2600k overclocked. I've been stressing the hell out of my 2600k since 2011. 5.1 ghz and 1.5 volts for 5 years straight now maxing out at 44c under full load prime 95.

That's awesome to know that you've been able to run such a high vcore for that long! I just recently purchased a gtx 1070 reference. I have a 2500k and felt the need to overclock it. After a full day of research, I got the cpu to run with prime 95, clocked at 5ghz. On a hyper 212 evo my temps hit 81c max under full load. I'm using the max vcore of 1.52.

they're saying it runs hot because there are multiple articles out there stating that it does. also multiple articles about the effectiveness of delidding. the reason your 2600k gets decent temperatures overclocked is because the IHS is soldered to the cpu die. ever since ivy bridge, intel has used questionable thermal paste instead of the fluxless solder. NO WAY you're gonna be getting better temps with a 7700k on your setup.

Oh alright i had no clue thank you Dangus for the info, i've been seeing so many articles on it. Yah SGtscream i have my 1070 gtx on the same loop lol, +150 on core currently can easily hit 200, and +800 on the Samsung memory running at the same 44c max under full load. I spent 900 on my custom liquid cooling system i built 5 years ago. it does a great job.

Got the CM 212 Led Air cooler today. So, quickly went ahead and removed the old one and installed it. i will let the images speak for themselves:

Intel Sink+Fan:

All the pins were correct when i checked today

I have an Antec GX1200 Case

My obviously biased suggestion.

Return your space heater, get your money back and buy a Ryzen chip 😀

My unbiased suggestion, return your space heater, get your money back and buy one that has already been delidded or get a 6700k, which seems like it has slightly better TIM.

I'd agree with this if I saw actual benchmarks. That's why i'm waiting :) Last time I went "team red" was the 1090t, then the sandybridges came out. Definitely not going to make that same mistake. I just hope AMD lives up to the hype.

Which version of Prime95 are you using? Any version higher than 26.6 puts an unrealistically high load temperature on the CPU due to the use of AVX instructions. You should be using either the older version of Prime95 or something like Intel Burn Test for temperature stress testing on any Intel chip newer than Ivy Bridge.

I really dont think the kraken 62 will be of much help either in this situation. The GameSpot 7700K review mentioned very high temps with the Kraken61.

I bought this from a local store and im not sure why they will accept a return. I should have waited for a better processor instead of upgrading :)

Most good stores have a no quibbles return policy within a matter of 2 weeks, some up to a month.

If I was you I would speak to your local store, raise your complaints, and you could potentially try getting in contact with Intel directly and state you are dissatisfied with the quality of your product.

They might tell you the processor is within the range of acceptable temperatures, however. At which point you'd have to start looking at what rights you have.

I'm genuinely feeling sorry for people that are paying a lot of money for these admittedly extremely fast but monumentally warm processors, especially as you pay a premium for the overclocking capabilities and that is limited by the thermal overheads.

Someone in another thread mentioned that a BIOS update helped them knock 10c off their temps due to the BIOS settings giving the cpu way too much voltage.

Might be worth checking what yours is currently drinking?

HI,

Im not sure whats changes to make in the BIOS. Here is a pic of my BIOS voltage settings:

I'm no BIOS expert, that's for sure, but that seems to be set to 1.152v, which wouldn't be too high at all.

If that is the case, this just might simply be a case of, you might have lost the silicon lottery.

Hopefully others will be able to give you some more positive news.

this isn't about the silicon lottery if he's trying to run his CPU at stock speed/voltage. the silicon lottery usually (or at least SHOULD) refer to overclocking..."your mileage may vary" stuff... its more about the RMA lottery in this case. or maybe that the 7700k is just kind of crap. but either way, 1.152v is defiintely not high at all. usually anything over 1.3v for an intel cpu would be considered the line you should be wary of crossing

My buddy bought the 7700k, his is hot not nearly as bad as yours. I know he's buying the tools needed above to take the cpu apart apply liquid metal paste. To be honest little happy i haven't upgraded my 2600k yet. Hopefully next generation wont have this issue.

Unless the stock cooler isn't mounted properly or the cooler itself has something faulty there is no reason intel would give you something that isn't able to properly cool an non overclocked chip. People telling you that the stock cooler isn't good enough for a non overclocked cpu are feeding you bs.

The 7700k doesn't come with a stock cooler, the OP bought a stock Intel cooler separately. Problem is the 7700k does have a high TDP at stock speeds and not all stock Intel coolers can handle that. If the OP has an older Intel stock cooler with a copper core, it might work okay. If it's an aluminum only cooler from a lower end Pentium or i3 chip, or one of the newer Skylake stock coolers which are aluminum only and only rated for a 65 watt TDP, then the OP is likely to have problems.

intel didn't give him a stock cooler. the CPU doesn't come with a cooling solution at all. and the temperatures are probably half the reason they don't bother packaging one with the 7700k in the first place. even though it's not *technically* overclocked that doesn't mean that it the chip isn't hot. its in the realm of an overclocked 6700k out of the box which is the same process and architecture...its basically just a higher binned 6700k when you come down to it. we're not trying to feed you bs, we're just more well-read and informed than lfkfkfkffs. the bottom line...which has been said 20 times i think in this thread...is that a "stock intel cooler" whichever one that may be...copper slug or no...is NOT designed to work with the 7700k. period. reason 1 intel doesn't give you one with it

Mike don't get discouraged. You replaced an inadequate stock heat sync with a less but still inadequate cooler master 212 evo. I tried warning you about this. Don't get me wrong, the 212 evo has served me well paired with my i5 2500k for many years.
That being said, max cpu cooler height for your case is 165mm.
I'd suggest pairing these cpu coolers with your 7700k:

In this guide don't get anything under the NH-D14.

if i buy a new cooler, there wont be any use for the newly purchased CM 212 LED. i already had to buy 2 PSUs due to my lack of knowledge (one is sitting in my storeroom now)

Looks like my case needs more fans. i put a hand inside the case near the cabinet fans (2 Antec RGB fans) and didnt feel any air movement. right now there are 2 case fans + 1 CPU fan (CM 212).

Also, my ambient temps are around 30-35, so i cannot compare with most others

i just ordered 2 Corsair ML 120 fans. im hoping for some more improvement

Also, as others suggested the prime version im using to test might be the reason

im using p95v2810.win64

im getting 80C when playing battlefield after installing CM212 LED cooler. (95C+ when using the intel sink-fan )
