My pc keeps crashing, it causes both monitors to freeze and then go black. sometimes they stay black forcing me to reset with the reset button. however sometimes the screens come back on and the error "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered" is displayed in the bottom left corner. this can happen during gaming, after a boot or even opening simple program such as google chrome. this was after a fresh install of windows 8.1.

my specs are:
intel pentium G3258
GTX 660
gigabyte Z97X G1 gaming 5

Hi,

These errors are triggered by a Windows service called 'Timeout Detection and Recovery' (TDR). You will only see this error on Windows Vista and Windows 7, as TDR is a feature of the new WDDM driver model. But you say that this error started after you switched to Windows 8.1, which is exactly opposite to natural.

This issue may occur because you have an outdated driver or other outdated associated software (overclocking utilities etc.) with your graphics card that used to work for versions earlier than Windows 8. Pls note that Windows 8 introduced a lot of changes in the way Windows works, graphical settings included.

So pls download the latest driver for GPU from the link: ...

Hope this helps. :)
