I had two 8gb ram sticks my motherboard ram slot isn’t working so now I can only use one I can’t play games like fivem anymore I’m trying to figure out if buying a single 16gb ram stick for now would work until I can make a new build im fine with some performance loss I’m just wondering game will run there a lot of mixed info online

Alright thank you for the help it just has me really worried some dude on some other support page said it wouldn’t because of how low my MHz would be at 1200 but I don’t think that really affects it as much as he thought I appreciate the help

Disregard what the other person said about that 1200MHz.

Single Channel Memory vs Dual Channel Memory doesn't have anything to do with the RAM speed.

DDR = Double Data Rate. So if you have 2400MHz RAM it's really 1200MHz times two which is 2400MHz.

Don't worry. Your game will work with 1 stick of 8GB of RAM and your RAM isn't reducing it's speed because of that.

It's not "Single Core". That refers to your processor. I think you mean "Single Channel" (one RAM module vs. two RAM modules) and even at just 8GB of RAM, that should NOT affect your game play, as to make it unplayable.

You’re right I did mean single channel and what are you exactly saying my games should be fine at 8gb? I’m running into the issue where games like fivem max out my ram at 8gb I was told on another support page it won’t matter if I switch to a single 16gb stick but I don’t really think that’s true I just wanted other’s opinions sorry if I’m rambling

Dual channel doubles the bandwidth. So in most games, there's very little to no difference for the older Intels as the games can't saturate bandwidth demand from even single channel. Stuff like video editing uses massive amounts of bandwidth, so dual channel or quad channel bandwidth size can make a huge impact in speeds.

Since many users are now streaming videos, doing some sort of tik-tok home vids etc, and modern cpus can benefit from dual channel use, that's become a priority.

But realistically you'd have to look at the big picture and ask if it's worth it. You'd spend out cash on ram, only to turn around and need to replace it with more/newer/faster ram later.

Or would that cash be better used as saved towards replacing the platform. If it's only going to take a month or 3 before replacement, I'd save your money, no real point in trying to band-aid a busted platform. If it's going to take much longer than that, maybe it is worth it. Only you can decide that.

Thank you for the reply I’m a student right now and haven’t been working so I don’t have much cash to spend or make so I can’t really spend much on the system right now I was thinking about replacing the MOBO so I could use my two ram sticks again but it’s so hard to find a 7th gen motherboard that doesn’t take months to get here that’s why I was wondering about single channel and how much worse my games would be I just need it to be able to run fivem I just don’t know what to do there no info online really and mixed opinions from tons of people saying my games won’t run well and some saying it’s not a big deal at all

Idk I’d be fine with taking a small performance loss but I’m just worried I’ll buy the graphics card and my fivem still won’t run some dude in some other support page said it won’t matter because my ram speed would only be going at 1200mhz but I see videos online of people doing the same thing on similar games and it works fine with just a minor frame loss

FiveM Minimum system requirements page states:
  • CPU Intel Core 2 Q6600 @ 2.40GHz / AMD Phenom 9850 @ 2.5GHz
  • GPU NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB / AMD HD 4870 1GB / Intel HD GT2
  • RAM 8GB (4 may work)
  • HDD 72GB + ~4GB
Unless you have a ton of other background applications running, the game should run on single channel 8GB. While your RAM slot may have died, RAM usage should not be your problem.

Ik it says it works with 8gb but that differs highly with servers I play on one of the top rp servers when I’m on it take 8gb alone to run with no background tasks open it worked fine before when I had the two sticks until my mobo slot stopped working do you think if I just buy a single 16gb ram stick for now it’ll still run just at a little less performance and thank you for replying like Batman Arkham night says it needs 8gb minimum 6 but it barely runs I have to have everything closed and it still almost maxes out I just need to know if the single channel won’t make my fivem unplayable

It shouldn't. The game SHOULD run fine on 8GB single channel. Should run even better on 16GB single channel.

Alright thank you for the help it just has me really worried some dude on some other support page said it wouldn’t because of how low my MHz would be at 1200 but I don’t think that really affects it as much as he thought I appreciate the help

I really appreciate the reply that just really cleared it up for me so much that one dude had me worried but really thank you
