I recently installed an extra 16gb of ram to my computer which specs are i5-8600k, 16gb (now 32gb) ddr4 ram (Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz (PC4 21300) C16 Desktop Memory Kit - Black (CMK16GX4M2A2666C16) is the exact model, along with a 1060 6gb and the mobo is MSI Z370 Gaming Plus. My computer runs fine, no crashing or issue with the memory itself, but it is stuck at 2133mhz, and If I try to set it to 2666mhz in the bios, my pc does nothing for 2 mins and tells me the overclocking failed and I am forced to reset the ram settings in order to boot. I was running 16gb of the exact same model @2666mhz fine, and the board can handle up to 64gb, so I don't see what the issue is. If someone could enlighten me on a solution I would appreciate it.

Hi Cdoge88.

That is still mixing RAM even if they are the same brand and model. They were not sold in the same RAM KIT which mean they were not tested together and are not made from the same batch. Could be why they are not working well together.

Another thing that could be the issue is that you use 4 sticks instead of 2 sticks. The memory controller is working harder and sometimes you cannot use the advertised speed when using 4 sticks instead of 2.

What is your BIOS version?

Did you try running them slower to see if it stick?

This is the version "
Z370 GAMING PLUS (MS-7B61) V1.A BIOS Release
------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. This is AMI BIOS release

2. This BIOS fixes the following problem of the previous version:
- Update Intel Micro code for security vulnerabilities

3. 2020/6/12

[Below information is Chinese language]

A. AMI BIOS ¥¿¦¡µo¦æ

B. ¦¹ª©¥»×¥¿¤U¦C°ÝÃD:
- §ó·s Intel Micro code ׸ɦw¥þ©Êº|¬}

C. §ó·s¤é´Á: ¤½¤¸2020¦~6¤ë12¸¹"

I just updated from a build from march 2018 to the latest, being june 2020. I did not try 2400mhz, I will... But you are saying if I had 2 16gb sticks instead of 4 8gb, then it might work correctly?

Update: 2400mhz didn't work either... is there any way to make it work besides getting 2 16gb sticks or no?

I have now determined that the manufacturer differs amongst the four sticks, two made by sk hynix and the other two by micron technology. Could this be the issue?

I have noticed that two show up as dual-rank and two as single rank in CPU-Z, could that mean anything?
