[SOLVED] My WD 1 TB at 100% as soon as i use ONE of the folders.

Hi!

My problem started with Adobe Premiere and a timelpas that i had added a sond to and saving it. All of a sudden Premiere doesn't answer and i let it be so for a good 20 mins before turning of my computer because everything had frozen.
Since this day on i can't use this WD 1 TB drive in my computer. In my sons and at my brothers computer everything works but not in my computer. I tried a HD from my sons computer on the same cables and port where the non working HDD was and everything works fine.

What has happened to it? My brother moved everything to a nother hdd and formated it and put all of my files back but nope it goes to 100% as soon as i want to use it.
Where do i start to check?

Is the drive used as a storage drive or does it have multiple partitions where one is allocated to the OS? If the latter, then yeah, the drive might be on it's way out. If the former, then it's probable that the OS is trying to look for the file you'd created prior for indexing. Either that or Premiere Pro is trying to find your last work to include in it's list of recent projects.

The drive is at least 6-7 years old and is just one partition and have allways been one large partition for storage of my photos.
SO Premiere could be looking for this file then .... interesting... what can i do to stop Premiere from doing this? Or the OS indexing thingy... How can i stop them from this?
 
Out of curiosity, which OS version are you on for Windows 10? Right click Start>Left click on System, you should be seeing the version for the OS at the bottom of the new window. You can try and disable indexing of your drive by right clicking on the HDD's partition(s) and then unchecking the drive indexing option. Choose ignore all if you come across the message to skip and what not.

As for the app, you can try uninstalling and reinstalling the Premiere and see if the issue is resolved.

Windows 10 Pro 21H1.

I can't access the drive in any way then i goes to 100% usage. 🙁 But i will at least try. But if this helps maybe i should erase the file i was working on then and turn the indexing on again... wont it be very slow otherwise?

If the index thing wont work i will reinstall Premiere, and tomorrow i will be picking up a new hdd from the store. As you are saying the drive is kinda old. But it works in my sons computer.

My (wild) guess on this is that the file system on the hdd is corrupted somehow (or it can be a physical issue as well) and the files that AP try to read (each time you try to connect the drive?) make it tries to read from a bad sector (in practice - probably an already reallocated sector).

Therefore, I suggest taking the following steps:
  • Connect the external hdd to a computer known to work together (w/o crash or hang).
  • Backup of all important files.
  • Optional (probably a good idea anyway) : Use a program such as Crystaldiskinfo and get the full S.M.A.R.T. data from it (post it here). This should tell if there are bad sectors and other health parameters.
  • Run a full disk check in windows on that drive (may take many hours) so Windows can deal with bad sectors on the drive. If it find many, it's time to toss it away.

I've now bought a new drive and are copying some of the old stuff from it to the new one but why is the speed fluctuating like this:

I got a tip in the store after explaining my problem to discclear on c: (diskrensning in swedish) to get rid of old links to old jobs. That did'nt work either.

I renamed the folder with every photos i'm copying and hops this helps to not just copying the problem to the new drive.

I've done chkdsk and fsc scannow on this disc and my brother had Aidfile Recovery to check the whole disc and non of the test reported any errors or bad sectors.
I can see if i can use crystaldiskinfo to check it when i'm done copying the files to the new one i bought today. :) because i really want to know what the problem is.

The file system on those hdd are separate and not depending on each other. You copying files and the existing file system on the new hdd will update.

It's the first thing i am afraid of, but now 5 hours later we have 86% done. 🙁

I googled smr but i can't find out if this one is: Seagate ST2000DM008 Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 256MB Cache 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

I really hope this new hdd is working... don't know what to do else. Maybe reinstall the Windows backup from may-april. 🙁

I've downloaded crystaldiskinfo now but how to i save the full S.M.A.R.T data from it?
 
I've now discovered that i am having sector problems and stuff on my old old very old sata 3 500gb drive as well. So lucky me who bought more space now i can remove that one.
BUT, i am not very god at DOS and just wanted to know if i open a elevated admin dos window and type sfc /scannow, what does it scan? The whole system or just c:?

You can Ctrl+C for text copy or do a text copy from menu. Then just paste it into notepad or directly in forum post.

From what I understand it does only tries to fix system files, has nothing to do with file system or disk issues directly.

It shows zero Reallocated Sectors Counts, but there are like 20 counts of UltraDMA CRC Error Count and also the hdd have lasted for more than 50k hours.

It means - there are no conclusive evidence of bad sectors, but still there are potential problems for whatever reasons. Personally I'd not use that hdd any more.


Thanks for translating it for me. I will keep my old photos only that i have a backup of on my NAS and will remplace it when i find an offer for a new one.

I've copied all the files from it to another one on my sons computer. Then i formated it and pluged it into my computer. Copied all thoose files from my new hdd to it and everything was ok untill yesterday evening. I went ti 100% when i looked at some of the photos in the photofolder. How's that even possible? I could copy them from the "broken" hdd to my new one, then i copy them again from my new hdd back after a format. This is allmost as it is living it's own life...

Then it boils down to how Microsoft decide to calculate HDD percentage usage. If Microsoft have that as a secret, then I can only assume they decide a non-responsive harddrive should yeld 100% to the user.

That may also explain those entries of UltraDMA CRC Error Count pretty well. If I where to guess - I'd claim there is a problem with the controller chip on the hdd, not the platters.
