my western digital velociraptor is faster then my ssd?

i have a Samsung 840 pro as my main drive and a western digital velociraptor as my second drive i have noticed the western digital velociraptor runs quite a bit faster then the ssd. yet this would seam counter productive. how is it a drive that has been in production since at least 2012 maybe before faster then something that claims to be faster then any hdd on the market. i can not justify the cost of an ssd when the western digital velociraptor runs so much faster. this is just in my personal experience however but i would like to know other peoples views on this issue.

is an ssd really worth it compared to a drive that for a 1/5th of the price can run rings around it and be 4 times the size.

read write rates are much better on the wdv the ssd is capping out at around 110mb/s however the wdv is getting up around the 200mb/s cap at times....i have no bottle necks but at times the ssd will sit and act like a 5200rpm drive. no idea why but the samsung tech said everything was normal...the drive is on sata 6gb same as the wdv. i dont get any issues at all...just find it funny that the wdv pulls out on top.

You've got a problem with your SSD, assuming that 110MBps is for sequential (like large file) transfers.

There is not a single metric where a raptor is even in the same league as a mid-range SSD, let along something like the 840 Pro. Raptor maxes at 200ish MBps, SSD 500MB +. Raptor manages maybe 300 IOPS, a cheap SSD 3000 at worst, something like your 840 Pro will do at least 8000ish IOPS at worst and in many cases it'll manage 100 times the IOPS of the raptor or more.

Check for a firmware update for your 840 Pro? Make sure you're on an Intel SATA controller, or if not, that at least your 3rd party controller drivers are up to date. Check the SMART data for anything fishy going on... if you're maxing out at 110MBps read or write for sequential transfers something isn't right.

when the drive was rma'd last time they did note the drive was quite sluggish when checked......maybe the drive isnt getting enough power.....nothings wrong in smart. controller is an intel controller....i dont know maybe theres something wrong with the mobo.

Are you using software to test the read speed, or just copying files?
If copying files, where are copying them to?

Some things to note:
You need to be running Windows 7 or later for TRIM support.
Check if it is enabled by opening a command prompt with Administrator privileges running the command "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify"
You should see "DisableDeleteNotify = 0"
Also make sure you are not defragmenting the SSD.

running windows 8.1 trim is on and i have never defragmented the ssd. checking i have noted that the ssd is not getting enough power. swapping it to the second psu does make it perform a lot better but still seams to be at 100% usage for minutes at a time

It seems strange that power would be a problem, the SSD will draw less than 5W at full load and a lot less than the Velociraptor.
You didn't answer how you are testing the read speed.

i have tried a few different ways mostly moving different sized files....started with an 80gb video that i was rezing down. then tried a few 1gb samples. then made a script that made 1000 copys of a file 22kb in size then moved it back and forth on the drives...also tried crystaldiskmark. it showed pretty much what ive seen all along

i have 2 1500 watt psu's the system draws 2200 watts idle due to my cooling setup and lighting and such. didn't relise that the psu the ssd was on was drawing 1494 watts idle. would explain why when the fans fire up and such the ssd speeds drop dramatically

just a note usafret it can be done i have the base system (mobo/gpu/hdds) on one the other runs around 12 fans water cooling as well as 2 fan controllers i have at least 10 led strips at 1m each maybe more........i go for looks on this build more then anything. the second psu is setup to run without the 24 pin connector connected. the second psu draws almost 1500 watts idle where as the system psu is drawing around 400-500 watts

depends on a lot of factors. the water cooling alone draws 220 watts. plus pumps draw 44 watts. fans are set to run at 2200 rpm and the system does not get shut down.......both fan controllers have lcd displays showing all fan speeds system temps and such....

mhmmm been there done that had enough people have a go at me for god knows how many things from the fact that i short the second psu every time to the fact that none of the lights are needed and the water cooling loop does almost nothing at all but look nice.....sure the blue leds might be over kill but i like it how it is. after reddit did there part i chose not to upload images anymore.....incase your wondering i have water blocks on the ram......just the ram.....i have the cooling gear for the gpu and cpu...i have installed it in the past had nothing but issues...most of all the fact it does not fit in the case without some trouble and a lot of force.

and you obviously have a dedicated 20Amp circuit for this, right? cuz that ain't plugging into your normal household 15A circuit. This means special 20A plug as well.

and how did you measure that it's drawing 2200 watts? amp clamp? or software?

lucky i live in Australia in a fairly remote area on high voltage lines.......i was lucky the local government approved it right away had to use a government contractor how ever i get quite the power bill each month however
