Sorry for posting this identical thread, but I read through the other ones and my problem is a little different.

The other day I plugged in my WD MYPassport 500gb external harddrive into my laptop and after a few minutes it just stopped working. I unplugged it and the little light came on for a few seconds and stopped. After that it lit up again, after I plugged and unplugged it, and now it wont light up at all.
After I leave it plugged in the laptop for a while, I feel the harddrive and it feels warm, like its working, but the computer wont recognize it nor do I see the harddrive in computer or in the device manager.

I tried Getdataback and another recovery program, but they cant find the harddrive or it wont show up in their program.

I really need to recover the data on it.
Thanks

Try it to reinsert to another port of your computer.. if that still cant recognize.. try to another computer.. you have to install first the driver of your external hard drive.. let your PC install it.. and never to remove when downloading and installing its driver.. also on my 2nd thought you have to check your cord.. must be not good quality.. try to buy original cord for your External drive.. if does help you.. choose me as your answer sO it can also help others.. okey?? Happy to Help 😀

Have you tried plugging it into different USB ports? Also when you plug it in does windows say "installing device drivers" or do you hear the little "ba da bump" (I'm bad at typing out sounds 😛). You can also try going into control panel, then search for "adminisrative tools" and click it, then open up computer management, and navigating to the "disk management" section. If you see your drive there WITHOUT a drive letter, assign it a drive letter and you should be able to access it's contents now.

Tried other cable, have the original, nothing. Tried other computers and nothing.
I just tried again, went into disk management and all I see is my "C internal harddrive" and "system reserved."

But I did discover that when plugged in, and when I put my ear right next to the external harddrive, real close, there is a sound...like a constant sssssss or something like that sound, kind of like buzzing and after a while the harddrive gets warm when I feel it.

I thinks your Hard Drive is Malfunctioning and when it heated like that.. it is sometimes cause of over power of the supply from your PC that will lead to its destruction. anyway.. if it is new try to get the warranty or replacement for that unit.. it is possible.. GudLuck!

". it is sometimes cause of over power of the supply from your PC that will lead to its destruction." What do you mean by that. I tried it on other laptops and PCs, i got the same results and I really need the data of this harddrive, just trying to figure out if its possible.

I feel your frustration, but I think your drive's condition is already beyond the capability of any data recovery applications. As it is already undetectable in your system you might already need to send it to a professional data recovery facility. You can try to consult WeRecoverData.com for a professional evaluation of your case or any professional data recovery service around your area.

But what is that sound though, I thought that if there was no sound at all than all that remains is professional data recovery, but Im hearing a sound when I plug in the harddrive.
