Hi all,

I would like to build a NAS server (for basic home media sharing) using an old PC at home. I need to buy HDDs for this purpose. Which ones should I go for? NAS HDDs or Desktop HDDs considering this PC will be ON 24x7 serving files as and when needed?

Regards

If it is on 7x24 and you have multiple disks then go for NAS grade as they have better vibration tolerance.

Consider getting a dedicated NAS box as the power savings will really add up.
Typical PC will use 80-250W depending on load.

A good NAS will idle at 5W and peak at 25W.

You can us your old PC as an adhoc server machine or games machine that is only on when needed.
