[citation][nom]kinggremlin[/nom]Teflon, Tang and velcro are all nice inventions, but hardly worth the budget that NASA has had to invent them [/citation]

You SOB! Don't you dare mess with my Tang!

Sadly mainframe computing is not being explored. I wonder why?

Its because NASA blew the money on the idiotic Space shuttle. They pork barrel space shuttle failed in all its goals. Not one goal, Was it safe? No. Was it cheaper then other space travel? No. These selfish people at NASA stopped real science and now they cry about the end of main frames? All they cared about was jobs for there friends at our expense.

The billions that went to keeping the space shuttle alive should of went to a new space vehicle or R&D to bring down the cost. Even to put the space station on the moon. No its not crazy. Remember its 100 billion sitting up on that baby.

Now in a couple of years. I think 2020 they will crash 100 billion space station into the ocean.
What the hell are they doing in NASA?

They need to wake up and strap some old missiles onto the space station and land it on the moon. Sound crazy? No. It can be done. If it can be landed on the moon , even in stages. It would provide for the first elements of a space base for the USA.

It cost 100 billion to get up there. Don't waste it.

That main frame could of been used to push and do research on parallel programming. We are going to move to parallel computing more and more.

Go USA> go Occupy

Maybe they lost their genius mainframe programmers? maybe theyforgot how to use it? Or as another person mentioned, they could have rented it out!

Maybe blast it in to space and land it on the moon.... start of a moon base. Use some old rockets, put thecomputer in parts... and hope they don't explode... land them on the moon, or on a moon of mars ;-) No BSOD's... just the occassional crash I guess... use some solar panels from satellites and batteries... or maybe even a small reactor as on the Voyagers :-D

So many things that can be done on the 'cheap', but why not use not that powerful pc's, and crappy programming make a budget of $1b and it will get approved. Have a great program that costs half of that, and it will not... it just can't be done "cheaper" 😛

Btw, also in reference to another poster, besides (cr)Apples and IBM Compatables, Nasa also used Amiga computers, since they were more powerful in the mid 80's :-D

"kinggremlin :
When your country gets taken over by another one because you had nothing to defend yourself with, that space program you're so proud of is going to look pretty useless.
I think it is a stretch to describe the primary purpose of NASA as "for the betterment of mankind." Teflon, Tang and velcro are all nice inventions, but hardly worth the budget that NASA has had to invent them if as you claim, NASA's purpose is to better mankind. NASA, itself, has done very little beyond generating jingoistic pride when it comes to having any sort of significant impact on human lives.NASA has done some very interesting and amazing things, and there is absolutely a place for it in our national budget, but don't kid yourself about bettering mankind. It's not doing that. At least it hasn't yet."

Do you actually know what you are talking about? You sound so clueless its embarrassing...

1- Name 1 major war where 1 member of the G20 was military threaten AND taken over in the last 60 years. Answer: none

2- In fact, name any military conflict since world war 2 ending with the attacker permanently taking over the attacked country. Answer: none

3- The list of absolutely fundamental discoveries leading to profound changes and improvements for the human race directly provided by NASA and indirectly helping countless science fields over the last 60 years is so extensive, I don't even know where to begin. Just educate yourself, I won't do it here for you. To have the audacity to reduce all those fantastic accomplishments to teflon, tang and velcro is insulting enough.

The department of defense? When was the last time this department passively "defended" anything against an external threat? It should be called the department of attack, because that's what it did, every 20 years on average. North Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. I won't mention other smaller "incursions" the US made in Grenada, Beirut, Libya and Panama. None of those country declared war to the US. None of those country threatened to take over the US. Still, the department of "defense" receive insane amount of money to attack and kill others when we could build schools and do science with this money. We do need an army, but to actually DEFEND ourself, but not a monster killing machine costing trillions like the one we have now.

[citation][nom]stratplaya[/nom]Please tell me they're not going to personal computers for their IS needs. Mission critical applications should not be run on a PC or MAC.[/citation]
Yes...yes we do. Thanks to the lack of critical infrastructure dollars it is our only alternative. Distributed computing is your friend! You may be surprised how much the Gov't in general even relies on the trusty XP OS.

You will be sorely missed NASA, you brought many a dream to children everywhere. Inspired many movies

Including the moon landing one.

Your absolutely right on this one.

Whilever fools are in power, this will continue. And they'll continue to believe that lying to the pubic is just fine.

How did that thread get stretched to include NASA as part of the DoD? Wow...

If you don't have a edge business you don't need real trust computing (reliability).

[citation][nom]amk-aka-Phantom[/nom]So what are they going to use instead, huh? iPads?[/citation]
Our idiot lame leadershipless fruitcake will go to the cloud, and like a fool, lose everything else. What works for communism is it all going to hell and losing any and every edge while the people become demoralized.
So far that score is 10/10.

[citation][nom]A Bad Day[/nom]Considering the fact that NASA receives less funding than US Air Force's air conditioning costs, why am I not surprised they're forced to slash budgets?[/citation]
...as if shutting down some (old powerfull) computers will really tip the balance.
I bet if you look at the wages of some CEO's, moviestars etc... (and tax THEM proberly) Then the US could have a proper budget for space exploration and kept these computers running.

Yet, this gets the news :-(

[citation][nom]aries1470[/nom]Hey the latest iPhone still has 512 GB of ram...[/quote]You mean MB.. it is MegaBytes, not GigaBytes ;-) give them 10 to 20 years, and maybe, just maybe on an iPhone 15 or iPhone 55, they may put that amount of RAM 🙂[/citation]

This is the problem today. All those tech-wanabees whom don't even know the difference between system-memory and storage capacity or Megabytes and Gigabytes, crawling these spaces where only the geeks used to rule.

Tom's isn't what it used to be, time to leave.

[citation][nom]ramon zarat[/nom]"...2- In fact, name any military conflict since world war 2 ending with the attacker permanently taking over the attacked country. Answer: none"
I beg to differ...Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and many countries on the African continent have changed borders, ownership, and have suffered ethnic cleansing so as to change the county's actual makeup of citizenry. If you define war as people taking sides and shooting with guns, tanks, missiles and the use of chemical (warfare) this is most assuredly true. Just because one of the world's major powers didn't get directly involved doesn't mean that a war was not fought.

I have been working for the US Government for nearly 25 years and have seen many changes in that time. NASA may as well be a branch of the gov't in any case, and receives most of what they need through different branches of the military. The tech we need to stay superior is alive and well.

[citation][nom]IndignantSkeptic[/nom]If humanity doesn't bother to look at and try to move things around space then when a large asteroid heads towards Earth, we will be totally screwed. Just because it doesn't happen very often doesn't mean it can't happen. I'd say getting into a position where we can avert that disaster, qualifies as being for the betterment of mankind. Wouldn't you?[/citation]

Have we not done something like that already? I feel like I read something about it on cracked. If so, then NASA has already fulfilled its purpose on that front.

And these great inventions only cost Americans TRILLIONS of dollars. :)

A Mac IS a PC. 🙂

[citation][nom]phillipw[/nom]A Mac IS a PC. 🙂[/citation]
Yep, a PC by another name.

My guess is the general population doesn't realize that parallel data centers computing far outweighs the usefulness of a single mainframe. The gov't is just now catching onto the cheaper method that the internet thrives on.

Big wheels turn slowly.

we are heading down a path of destruction we are the modern day roman empire and war is what makes us feel good the winning and domination takes our mind off out own issues and problems such as corruption and poverty and well the list goes on and on and on

Well That's The March Of Technology.

One Day The Power Of Today's Super Computers Will Fit Inside Of A Watch Or Something Smaller And The Very Old Folks That Remember The Days Of The Massive Machines Will Sit In Awe At How Far Technology Has Come.
