I picked one of these up from newegg a couple of months ago and I stuck it in my computer and threw an audio cd in just to test and it worked fine. It wasn't until about a month later that I actually had some blanks to fill up. Well, I started up Nero and everything was working right, or so I thought. It would only see the burner as an image recorder. I fiddled with all the settings and used all the tricks in my admittedly small bag of said tricks and still no go. I thought it might be a firmware thing so I checked NEC's site and the firmware update won't be available for about another month.

I'm facing a wall here and would appreciate any ideas you guys have. Thanks in advance.

Lysander,

I'm having exact same problem.

Mobo: Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
DVD-ROM drive: Lite-On SOHD-167T, jumper on Slave
(CD-rom works, does not play normal music CD)
DVD R/RW & CD-R/RW drive: NEC ND-3520A, jumper on Master

Currently using one IDE ribbon cable on the primary IDE connector of the mobo, with the DVD-writer (Master) on the middle connector of the ribbon cable and the DVD-ROM (Slave) on the end connector of the cable. Is this the correct setup?
I want both to function independently with the ability to copy from one drive to the other. Totally unclear as to how to set this up ... ??

Writer does not burn with this set-up though: only thing I can find is a Virtual Device Image Recorder. And this functions properly: nice image saved to hard disc. But NEC ND-3520A writer is nowhere to be found as a device ...

Btw: Any suggestions for good freeware DVD-playback software?

Cheers!

I have a DVD writer like this but I can see in Nero all the options DVD image recorder, DVD, CD RW Image recorder and CD RW. But the thing that my DVD writer does is:
Sometimes you load a DVD and it fails to recognize it. It shows the drive letter but if you click on it, it shows it as being empty. I can fix this by rebooting the machine, but is very annoying to do this frequently.
Other than that the NEC is a great writer I have gone thru 125+ DVDs with just one coaster and 200+ cd's with 0 coasters.

If anybody has a fix for my problem please let me know.

Connectors only define position if the drive is jumpered as "cable select". If the "master/slave" jumpers is used, then it doen not matter.

Go in devices manager, and install microsoft ide drivers instead of nvidia one. This may help the software to recognize the drive. Or, maybe you'll have to update Nero with either the latest drive info or to the last version.

Best way to set up drives for disk to disk copy is the hdd master[if you dont have a SATA hdd) with the dvd-rom slave on the same IDE cable.

The burner alone as master on the other cable.

If you have a SATA hdd, then put one dvd one a cable and the other one on another cable.
