Question Need advice on single-slot graphics card

Hi! Need advice on a single-slot card that is better than this: https://www.newegg.com/evga-geforce-gt-740-superclocked-04g-p4-2744-kr/p/N82E16814487043.
I'm looking for a card that has better performance than the EVGA GT 740, a thin cooling system, and Windows XP driver support. Any suggestions?

You might find a single-slot GTX 750 or 750 Ti out there somewhere, but these are nearly decade-old GPUs and you'll be at the mercy of what you can scrounge at eBay.

Unless you can track down a very specific GPU like that, I would not be optimistic about making a meaningful upgrade with these specific requirements.

Remember, the OP says they want explicit XP driver support. The 700 series was the last one to offer that, unless I'm mistaken (which I could be, it's been a while).
Yeah, gonna top out at a 750Ti on that. Even then, it's not easy to find a single slot one IIRC, or without needing some....customizations. Even then, not sure if the cooler can be 2 slots and just have a single expansion slot bracket. Etc etc.

Therefore, I chose to ignore that limitation. Not sure how strongly the OP is tied to XP.

Windows XP support is important

AMD R - 200 series is the max with XP drivers on that side of the fence. An R7-260X is roughly equivalent to the GTX750Ti.

Can you run external power to this? ie 6-pin or 8-pin power?

Can you tell us if the single slot requirement is for the whole card or just the bracket? ie, would something like this work/fit?

Sometimes the case only has 1 slot, but the GPU cooler itself can be 2.
One example of this is the old BTX(?) boards that were arranged upside down, so if the x16 slot was in the top (which it usually was) then you're limited to a single expansion SLOT, but there'd still be cooler space between the GPU and CPU.

Sometimes when you wanna break the rules, you gotta do some mods.
Here's another example notice the 2nd bracket slot doesn't have any display outs on it, so you could cut the top slot off. Remove the plastic heatsink shroud if clearance requires. etc etc.

Also need to consider UEFI cards, etc etc. Not sure what vintage the mobo is.

OP

may I know what you're planning to do with Windows XP?

if it's gaming, then even a 750ti is more than enough for most XP games. Have used XP for several years, so I sort of have an idea.

goodluck on finding a single slot 750 ti.

For gaming indeed. Also had plans to make a dual boot with Windows 7.

actually, I'm also building an XP machine for nostalgia purposes.
have run XP with just an old ATI gpu years ago, and that was enough.

the XP pc I'm building now will just be using a GT 530. Which is much weaker than a 750ti.
should be enough for the XP games I want to play.

however, since you plan to dual boot with Windows 7...
I assume you also plan to play some Windows 7 games? Then getting a 750 ti is fine.

I'm about to get one of the old Shuttle computers. Most likely it will be LGA 775, so legacy bios. Not sure if the card suggested by tennis2 will fit. Something like this:

UPD: since I'm limited to GTX 750 TI, apparently this is the most powerful thing I can find: https://www.techpowerup.com/206212/galaxy-intros-single-slot-geforce-gtx-750-ti-razor-graphics-card
Thank you for the explanation. If it's going to be like the one in the picture, then yes, you'll need a cooler that's also 1 slot.......unless you give it a hot rod hole in the side panel..... 😉

I'm curious how good the idea is to use "Quadro K2200" instead? This is an equivalent of the 750 Ti, also single-slot and much easier to find. I wonder what problems might arise?

I wonder how likely it is to rearrange the cooling system from Quadro K2200 to single-slot GTX 750 Ti? Their PCBs look almost the same, and the TDP at 750 Ti is even a bit smaller, is it worth a try?
