I need to build a PC that will be used primarily to pair with an Oculus Rift S. I already have a GPU: MSI GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER. I'd like to build the rest of the system around that card.

The primary use of the Oculus Rift S will be to watch 180-degree SBS VR video in the 5k - 6k resolution range. Some of it is encoded with x265 and some x264.

It will also be used for some gaming, but probably games like Beat Saber and casual gaming. I'm not sure how resource intensive that one is.

My primary concern is that I buy enough CPU so that it doesn't limit anything, but not so much that I'm paying for features or speed I'll never use. My understanding is that CPU is important even in GPU-intensive applications for things like getting the proper frame rate.

So, I'd really appreciate any advice you can give me about which CPU to buy, and a motherboard and memory to go with it. I'm not stuck on AMD or Intel--the last couple of builds I've done have been AMD because, at least at the time, it seemed I could get more power for the money with AMD. I'm not sure if that is still the case or not. I'm leaning towards some Ryzen processor, but could go Intel if I'll get more bang for the buck that way.

I'm also not very concerned about being able to upgrade individual components later. I've only done that once or twice. Typically, I'll build a PC and then use it for five or even six years before I run into some reason I need more power, and by then the latest CPUs and GPUs usually don't even work in the motherboard anymore, and I just end up starting over anyway. My last post here before this one was in February 2014, when I built the system I'm replacing now.

Please let me know if I need to provide any more detail to get a good recommendation. And thank in advance for your help!

OP here again. I'll add that I have wired ethernet to the PC, so I don't need wifi on the motherboard, but if the best motherboard for my application has wifi on it, that's not a problem. It might be nice to have bluetooth, but imagine I could add that if/when I need it with a card if it's not on the motherboard. Thanks.

What is your budget for the CPU RAM and Mobo?
Besides a budget, I would recommend a Ryzen 5 3600x or Ryzen 7 3700x. On Intel's side, I would recommend the 9700k.

Great question and I should have addressed that better in my original post. But that's primarily why I'm asking. I could buy a Ryzen 9 3900x--in fact, yesterday I put one in my Amazon shopping card and then started thinking that could very well be too much CPU for the GPU I already have and the use I have in mind. So, I thought I'd come ask here. The recommended CPU for the Rift S is "Ryzen 5 1500X or greater," which leaves me wondering, how much greater? I want to go high enough so that when I end up needing to upgrade, it's the GPU where I feel the bottleneck first.

I can spend as much as I need to, but don't want to waste money either. I'd like the system to remain pretty good for quite a while. There is a chance I'll want to pair it with an upgraded VR headset eventually, but if I needed to upgrade/replace the system when I do that, I will. And like I said, I've only been doing that kind up upgrade every 4-6 years based on my past history.

Thanks!
