As you can see by my username, I'm a PC rookie. I recently, purchased a scanner to use with my 5 year old DELL. Much to my surprise, Windows 95 operating system, hardware specifications, lack of USB ports, etc. rendered my top-end scanner useless. Now, I need a new PC. I have read several articles and forum posts to gain knowledge of PC purchasing. What I have discovered is there is more to know than I wish to know. I am sure of a few things. I want an AMD processor. I don't need a high-end super-computer. I don't want to spend a lot of money.

I'm interested in learning the difference between Athlon and Duron. Could someone direct me to an article which compares or describes these? I don't wish to 'build' my own PC, due to my lack of experience in the hardware arena.

Any direction would be appreciated.

I don't have Years and Years of Experience, Im 18 yrs old and just starting to build my Second PC, By june it should be complete.. If you gonna go with AMD (SMART CHOICE) and you don't want to hurt your wallet.. the ANTHLON XP 1700+ isn't a bad Idea.. if you can afford alittle more then by all means deffinetly go for the Anthlon XP 1800+.. not that bad in price, but is a pretty fast processor..

Go to www.amd.com and read up about Durons and Athlons. You will find all the info you require there. Once you've brushed up on some of their spec read some of THG reviews and see how the processor actually perform in the real world (benchmarks). Your choice of Amd as a processor is a wise one.

The duron has a slower Level 2 cache which makes it slower then the Athton and I would not recomend a duron. Dell is the best of the mass consumer manufactures. Resently I been looking at iBUYPOWER pc's which are pretty nice and are really cheep check it out at www.ibuypower.com
