I already have an SSD and an HDD, both of which I'm gonna continue using with the new configuration.

Right now I'd like to cut my expenses as much as possible, so I'm only considering an integrated GPU. Maybe I'll get a dedicated one after a year or two.

I don't plan on using this rig for anything fancy, some 1080p gaming, some video editing, maybe some programming, perhaps setting up a virtual machine for Linux (Windows 10 will remain my default OS).

No overclocking if it's gonna void my warranty or make my system unstable. I want the safest bet I can make.

I'll also probably invest in a few case fans for better airflow but I haven't listed any specific model here.

I'm not too keen on RGB or glass sidepanels. I want functionality first and foremost.

I've included my local retail price for every item.

Configuration A:

CPU: Ryzen 5 2400G w. stock cooler ($150)
MBO: ASUS TUF B450-Pro Gaming ($137)
RAM: DDR4 16GB 2x8 G.Skill 3200MHz Ripjaws V, F4-3200C16D-16GVKB ($130)
Case: Fractal Meshify C ($109)
PSU: Corsair 550W CX550M ($88)
Storage: already have an SSD+HDD combo
Peripherals: got it
Display: using my old one

I've got a dilemma whether or not I should opt for these components instead:

Configuration B:

CPU: Ryzen 5 3400G w. stock cooler ($198)
MBO: MSI X470 Gaming Plus ($147)

Questions:

  1. How much performance am I sacrificing by not going for an R5-2600/3600 with a discrete GPU?
  2. Does overclocking RAM to 3200 MHz still leave the warranty unaltered? Or should I therefore buy a cheaper, 2666 MHZ rated RAM?
  3. Should I explicitly ask my retailer if the BIOS on the MBO is updated for whichever CPU I get? If not, since I don't have compatible spare parts just lying around, can they do it for me? Is ordering mainboards from Amazon dangerous because of that?

I need some advice. Feel free to suggest alternative parts for RAM, case and PSU as well.

Thanks.

Almost $300 more expensive than going down the integrated GPU road. Is it worth it?
