Need help deciding on a router.

Ive always used just a modem provided by my ISP to connect my computer.

But, now that I've purchased a smart tv, I need a router (my modem only has 1 ethernet port) and I'm just learning the terminology and I'm getting lost in all the choices and numbers.

So here is all the relevant info I can think of:

*My internet download speed is roughly 65Mbps (Charter).

*I will most likely be wiring the ethernet directly from the router to the TV and avoiding wireless.

*I would like to have wireless capability in order to update my phone over wifi (atm I have to drive to the gas station to siphon theirs for smartphone OS updates)

I am a gamer so I'm also concerned about how/if adding a router between my pc and modem will add noticable delay/ping, I've heard it may add 5ms more latency but I have no idea if it's true.

I was looking at the Asus RT-AC66U but would love other input: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320115&cm_re=ASUS_RT-AC66U-_-33-320-115-_-Product

Thanks for reading and would love suggested products (would also prefer a black router, but don't let that stop you from posting links)

Also, I was chatting with my isp to see if they offered an all-in-one kinda thing but they dont, they said something about an ethernet port extender? wtf is that and how is that different to a router?

The question is.... How much money You want spend ?

You dont need any expensive router to get this...

That Asus looks ok.

I am Linksys fan so.... 😀

Just buy this : EA6900

http://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-EA6900/

You dont need anything better and You will not need in the future 😀

Or... buy that Asus 😉

If you want to connect a wifi signal using your internet connection now. Buy a wireless router and connect/configure it in your modem. You need a WAN port to connect your wireless router. If you want to control the log of the games, you can use software to control it, like microtek or any you found in the internet. If you want most high speed connection upgrade also your internet connection in your ISP.

The question was : "Need help deciding on a router."

So what router would You consider ?

Sorry answering without reading the title: I recommend LInksys router its better and durable

USE LINKSYS ROUTER ITS BEST AND DURABLE

Lol combinebasic...
Yeah but what Model ? lol !!!???

I heard that Asus ( I love Asus motherboards and all stuff buttt....) Qos make some problems...

btw. Can you believe that some Linksys Gateways (like WAG200G) still work, after 10 years ... ?
However i dont believe that any new Linksys can work for that long...

Thanks guys, I'll probably get the linksys ea6900 from amazon, or something similar, maybe I'll get lucky and a cyber Monday deal will hit on the same model. Right now is 99 on amazon down from 109.

I am fully aware that there may be a better choice but i am Linksys Fan (sorry) as well as Asus Fan (but Asus in Networking ? Hmmm...).

btw. Here is EA6900 interface, the password is : admin

Mostly you will find very little difference in the performance of the larger brand name routers. None of the router manufacture make their own radio chips or cpu chips. Many times routers from different manufactures that claim the same "speed" have exactly the same chips inside.

You have to be very careful of any reviews especially from consumers because performance of a router is much more affected by the house and neighborhood than small difference between manufactures.

In general the most obvious difference is going to be in the software. Some routers have things like VPN support or parental controls etc etc. Only you can determine which of those features has any value.

In general the most cost effective router are ones that claim a speed of 1200. This is because the end devices must support the higher speeds also. The most important one is the end device must have more than 2 antenna to use the faster rates. The asus you posted uses 3 antenna. It will of course connect to 2 antenna end devices. Mostly do not get bit by the big number is better marketing. If you can use the feature then it has value to you other wise it is wasted money.

Even very inexpensive router are faster than most people internet connections, even many mid prices ones can keep up with 1g google fiber connections...at least on ethernet ports

Now I like asus routers because many of them support dd-wrt and asus has its own version of dd-wrt already. Tplink supports it well also but if you do not care about third party firmware then that has no value to you.

There were all kinds of router specials the last couple days. Amazon had a couple that sold out in seconds. Monday I suspect will be much more of the same.

Now. That is what i would call a "nice reading"..
Ps. Listen to this people...
Pss. WRT Linksys routers are going for 3rd party Firmware like DD WRT too and its very good idea...

Thanks, interface looks clean and simple. I chose that over the asus because I hate the flannel looking decal on the asus. The 6900 looks nicer
