I just built my own PC a few months back, and now that I have, my wife constantly nags me about how hers is terrible, and mine is nice. Hers has some major age on it, and has a few things are about to fail. Nothing i'd say is really salvagable from it due to its age.

Approximate Purchase Date: Maybe a few months down the line.

Budget Range: As low as I can get it. below 200 would be nice.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: School, web surfing, youtube. Her school does require some heavy excel and some statistics programs, and some other assorted programs, but don't think they are that system instensive.

Parts Not Required: mouse, keyboard, windows, speakers, GPU and possibly monitor. If I went with a new monitor I know my budget would have to go up. i'll have to double check her PC regarding her old drives. I'm thinking they are likely not SATA, same as her HD.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: tigerdirect or amazon. Can't use newegg since it has an office in my state and charges sales tax.

Country of Origin: USA

Parts Preferences: None

Overclocking: None

SLI or Crossfire: None

Additional Comments: This PC doesn't need to be that powerful, it just needs to do the easy stuff well. No games will be playing on this pc, and if there one day was, Ill just throw my old low end GPU in it from my old PC. I am not very familiar with the compenents at this low of a budget, so an advice would be appreciated.

the tri-core athlon will also have a chance of unlocking into a quadcore athlon! (or even a quad core phenom!) even if it does not it will be able to handle everything you listed with ease.

with downgrades it would come to $222.93 for a system still more than capable of the tasks listed.

[EDIT]:

just read about the 'no newegg' if you just get the same parts from tigerdirect it woulod probably cost a similar price.
