I currently have a dual-CPU rig as the following:
Opteron 140[B3] x2
with 2 Gigs of DDR400 ECC Reg RAM (4x512, 1G per CPU) [ECC disabled],
Enermax Liberty 620 W
ATI All-In-Wonder X600
Tyan S2895
2x 120G SATA (SATA 1, not 2, not NCQ) HDD from Seagate (Raid 0)
well, the games I am going to play mostly are mainly Unreal tournament (UT, UT2004, and most likely UT2007), BF2, Diablo 2 and a lot of Non-3D games (like sudoku and some older generation Dos games)
I am going to settle for a low quality graphic solution for these games (ok, except diablo 2) with a resolution between 800x600 and 1024x768
more details:
BF2 is going to be 800x600, lowest quality, max distance (so I'll see the enemy when they see me)
UT 2004 is lowest quality(I played lowest and highest, not significant difference in performance) at 800x600
Diablo 2 at 800x600 (they just don't have 1024x768)
I also occasionly run MATLAB and 3DS Max (3DS is the single reasion I am trying a multiproc rig as 939 isn't out at the time I am buying the rig; I have like upgraded mostly everything except CPU since I bought this in august 2003) so this rig is usually on 24/7 (for other stuff like recording late night TV as well)
the issues I want to address:
1) UT2004 having difficulties going above 50 FPS at any instant(I don't know how my friends are getting 60 to 100 FPS avg on a P4 2.4 Rig with a Radeon 9000, maybe UT 2004 isn't as multithreaded as I'd like to yet)
2) BF2 seems to be choppy at some point in time (I haven't tested extensively if it is network or whatnot, but getting killed every time the game becomes choppy is an issue, and I am not connected to the same server every time)
3) I might go try Quake 4 in near future (low quality isn't a problem here). Does the "Dual-core patch" benefits dual processors (as opposed to dual core only) as well?
4) Power consumption will become an issue (if I am going for 2x Dual Core I can't even afford SLI with the current PSU anyways) as my mom keeps complaining about the electricity bill
now is there some suggestions on what should be upgraded first?
