Need help updating old nexus 7

My wife got the 2012 nexus 7 for Christmas and while she loves it, she's missing the newest Android update, especially since she has the nexus 5 phone.

Now I've seen threads on how to do this, but my knowledge of this stuff only goes so far. Does anyone have a dumbed down version to help flash a new update to the device?

according to releases it should have been released for the 2012 nexus 7 try going to settings, scroll to the bottom, go to about and software update should be there

If it is not WiFi edition you can't upgrade to latest version. If it is, whats current version?

Unfortunately it is the wifi and data enabled tablet, thought there is no SIM card in it. We never use it except on wifi.

As you can see on google's own site that factory image for Nexus 7 for lollipop is realeased. You might need to recieve OTA update:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Or flash it manually, but I think you should wait.

I wish I knew how to flash manually. I'm constantly refreshing her tablet for the update. I can't even get the freaking Root to work on my Samsung so this is beyond my level of expertise. Sucks, too, because the OS she has is so buggy and slow, she almost throw the tablet while using it.
