Ok so I got a Belkin wireless g router in my room running my nas and its on its own wireless network but there is no modem connected to it and my father said that if I wanted my network to have internet I need to setup a vlan between the two routers the problem is I don't know anything about vlans and the switch and main router is on the other side of the house so I need someone to teach me about vlans and tell me if i need a physical connection to the main router and also try to keep it as simple as possible because I am 13 thank you for every response that is posted.

First this has NOTHING to do with a FreeNAS server (as the title says). You won't get network people to look at a NAS post.

I don't know what your dad is trying to accomplish by asking you to have a VLAN. The VLAN definition would be on the core switch you are connecting to. I would assume that your dad controls that switch. I don't know that your belkin can VLAN tag traffic, but any VLAN you would be on would a usually be a port based VLAN rather than an tagged VLAN.
Yes he knows what to to do but he want me to learn what a vlan is and how it works its just everything i look at or read is really confusing so I am just simply asking for some help
