need help with my new maxtor diamond plus hd!!

I just installed a new Maxtor Hd along with a new motherboard and Amd 64 939 pin processor when I power up and insert the boot disk it starts to find the HD but the it says "ATA pm ide found (sign that looks like a spade here)<
ATA ps ide not found" and then nothing. I've tried the factory setting of cable select, then master. I even went into BIOS to make sure it was set to PM and the dvdrom was set to Secondary master....where do I go from here?

Assuming you're loading WinXP, Put the WinXP installation CD in the available CDROM drive, Set boot sequence in CMOS to CDROM first boot, HDD second boot, boot the machine, at the Press any key to boot from CDROM press any key and you're on your way.

BIOS is looking for a Primary Slave.

Make sure your Maxtor is jumpered as Master, AND on the non-colored end of the ribbon cable. Put the colored end into the mobo. The middle connector should be empty.

As ryan points out, dvd should always be first in boot priority.
