My boss knows I work on computers and gave me $500 to help him build a new one because his old one is showing its age being slow and sometimes freezing up. However, there are some things that I need a bit of assistance with so I don't mess up anything.

First of all the computer he has now is like 10+ years old with a hard drive that's even older. It has 2 drives one that came with the pc and the older one and they are set to be mirrored because that's what the previous guys did when they set it up. I'm also pretty sure that's where windows is installed because I haven't had a chance to look inside yet to see if there's anything else in there.

What I wanted to do was install windows onto an SSD and then move those drives to the new pc. Would it be possible to move mirrored drives without issues? Also how would I go about putting windows on the SSD when its on the drive (drives?)

My second issue is that he originally wanted to split the drives between the old and new computer as he has a credentials program on the computer that he wants to stay on it to be used at home while also getting all of his data on his new pc as well. I asked if we could just move it and he said it can't be moved via flash drive so I'm not sure what to do there.
My final issue is that he wants his stuff backed up so when we moved the drives there's no risk of data loss but I am unsure of how to do that. Would i need a software or something?

I think the best course of action would be to buy a new 1tb hard drive and a windows install ssd and put those in the new pc and then get like a beefy flash drive and external hard drive and move everything he needs onto the new pc with that and keep the old pc how it is. Do you guys think this would be the best way to do it or is there a better way.

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

10+ year old disks should be retired for reliability concerns. They can't be that large if they are that old. A 1 TB HDD is $40. 1TB SSDs are under $100.
Don't move drives. Just move data. You will have to reinstall programs anyway because of the fresh OS install.
