Need Ideas For Networking Projects

Hello all. I am an IT student who also works in the field. I have an average - above-average knowledge of networking, but lately I have been looking to further my knowledge. I am looking for a project idea that I can sit down and figure out, which will challenge me and expand my knowledge of networking and network implementation.

Any suggestions or tips?

I'd buy some old Cisco (or other good brands) switches and routers. The old models still have a lot of feature at a fraction of the price Then get a good book or 2 and work through the books and actually practice. Getting the hands on experience is key (I made this mistake).

After getting my first job at data center 6 months ago in the networking team, by far the most common thing I work on is firewalls, opening new ports for clients. So I would buy a cheap older firewall to practice on.
