I was thinking of getting a 74gb raptor for the OS and some apps, but it got discontinued at the egg, so now i think i'll go for the 640gb caviar black, i know that a ddr2 build at this point its not smart but it made it so much cheaper, i mean dd2 fit exactly on my budget, besides the fact that i was running a amd 5000 be with a 8600gt so anything is an upgrade lol, i just want some opinions in what i did that could have been better, just for me to know next time...

That's a nice PSU, but more than you need for a single 4890. Check out an Antec PSU in the 650W range. Newegg.com appears to be sick at the moment, so I don't have a link for you. If you intended to run two of them in Crossfire, carry on...
www.frostytech.com has good CPU cooler reviews. I believe you'll find much more cost-effective models than the Zalman; cheaper, and/or quieter, and/or better coolers.
Otherwise, this is a nice build; heck it's STILL a nice build...

Are you planning to significantly overclock? Also not counting the MIR on the reapers, for $10 more you can upgrade to a very nice crossfire board and fast DDR3 ram.

You are not missing much performance by going with DDR2 memory. IMO... You only see a benefit with DDR3 with the Core i7. The 850w PSU might be an overkill if you aren't planning to run them in Crossfire. You might be better suited with a 750w PSU.

I would go with the WD 640GB Black hard drive and the Xigmatek Dark Knight s1283V over the Zalman 9700 and WD 250 hard drive.

I already got the Zalman, I bough it when it was $34.99, I though it was an still for that price, the PSU i got from a friend who bough 2 because he found a deal, and sold 1 to me for 100 bucks, then i bough the mobo and the cpu & vga combo i spend around $870 in this build which i think is pretty reasonable becuase my friend got a similar build with PII 920 and 4870 that he build for $1000 and sumthing like a month and half ago, besides i do plan on adding an additional 4890 in the future because as i did with my last build, i dont upgrade for quite some time..

Okay... You got a good deal on everything and looks like you will have a very solid build. Once you get to overclocking, your friend with the AM3 build will be a little jealous of your performance.

k, i have got my build and im enjoying it, except for vista sp1 keep on failing and i come to notice some clicking noise that appears suddenly, i believe its my zalman 9700 , i hear the noise around the cpu to the back plate, i think is the HSF because i shift it when the pc is off and it makes a similar noise, i don't know why, i mount it correctly and isn't that old, and it didn't make that noise in my old build, although it was mount wit the fan going down, but in this build i mount that fan as recommended..i just want to know what the hell is it??

It almost sounds like a ballbearing has or is going out on the Zalman fan. One option you can try is to remount it like you use to have it and see if still makes the same noise.

decent ddr 3 will cost about $15 more , and you may even save that much by buying a 955 + am3 mb combo

You may also find better value with a 945 that allows you to go AM3 all the way


and if you are definitely buying an AM2 mb and ddr2 ram you might as well save more and buy a 940 be combo

ok guys thanks for the support, ya really help meto get this build done! . also i fix the stupid clicking noise, thanks God it wasnt a ballbearing problem, they way i fixed was thaks to my 10 yrs old brother..guess he learned from me, lol, no really he sugest to put the fan controler to keep the fan at a constant speed because we notice that when i turn the pc and the fan spin at full speed it didnt make the noise, the noise would just start when cool & quiet would bring my cpu to 800mhz ( also disable in bios) and the HSF would come down to the slow speed, with the controller it onlys comes up when im tuning the speed from highest to lowest or vice verse, it doesn't comes up when is at low or high, go figure, as to what is the problem i don't know, it might be a ballbearing starting up after all, but i wont change the fan just yet, like i said it is not that old, it has not been a year yet, so i would wait until it cant be fixed and then i might buy one of the HSF that you guys suggested..

I was talking to my friend, today at work, and he said is not a good idea to overlook this problem wit the fan, he said i might come home one day and find my pc dead. we wouldn't want that to happen now would we...so he recommended me to replace the fan just the fan, he say is sell sparely for around $16, so i like the idea, now problem is that since i did the dragon platform i don't want my fan blue anymore it doesn't really goes wit my case, i want a red one, if any can link me to 110mm red fan, i couldn't find any, only idea i got is to buy Zalman Fatal1ty CPU 120mm fan, just the fan and sanded until if fits, some 1 did that and it works, but i cant find where to buy that either, any help will be much appreciated..

Yes... You should be able to take the square cover off but I don't know how that will effect the red lights on the fan by doing so.

Now as far as Newegg specifications about the 9700, the fan uses a 110mm and that one is a 120mm..i hope it works..
