Need some help OC'ing Q6600 w/ 680i SLI board

Hey guys, rather new to this overclocking business and these forums. Looking for some help before I change / do anything. I'll list my setup below.

Q6600 @ stock speeds ... G Stepping (2.4 Ghz)
2x2GB Patriot Extreme Performance PC-8500 1066Mhz RAM 5-5-5-15
EVGA nForce 680i SLI Mobo

I'm aiming to keep a 1:1 ratio running the RAM @ 1066MHz. Lemme run this by all of you more knowledgable people.

Currently my FSB is sitting at 1066MHz with the multiplier sitting at 9x.

Now in order to keep a 1:1 ratio between the FSB:RAM ... I need to do this ...

Put the FSB to 2132MHz (533 x 4) (which i don't think is possible) and the multiplier at 6x to give me 3198MHz?

I'm completely confused and do not want to ruin anything.

How can what I want to do be accomplished? Is there any harm running the FSB / Ram UNLINKED and at diff frequencies?

533 mhz FSB will probably be unreachable. If your not overclocking then leave your FSB at 266 and use a memory multiplier of 4. This will get your ram at the rated speed of 1066.

I plan to overclock. I would like to get to at least 3 Ghz (though I said that above, but I didn't ... sorry) which would be 333Mhz FSB but then I get lost on what the RAM should be set to.

I tried to look in BIOS for memory divider settings, but didn't really see any. I'll have to look again.

I say forget about keeping the 1:1 ratio with the ram and fsb, its not gonna happen. The 680 isn't going to be able to handle that. Just link the FSB and Ram, and be done with it. If you're upset that you just bought some super expensive and fast ram, just manually adjust the timings to something much faster than what's on the box.

i'm unsure what i'm going to do as far as oc'ing now. i guess run the 1066 at 800 and see if i can run 3.6ghz stable.

BTW and FYI i have the same MOBO(only xfx version) and a Q6600.
I am actually planing to OC the cpu once a get a good air cooler

NO, do not link the ram!

Best thing about that board is the ability to unlink the ram and fsb. Makes OC'ing a easy thing.

Unlink the ram in the bios, up your ram voltage to 2.05, up your northbridge to 1.4ish, leave the cpu set to auto unless you are going for 3.0 ghz or so, and up the fsb.

I had that board for 2.5 years, and had an e6600 @3.5, e6750 @3.8, and a Q6700 @ 3.2 and a Q9450 @3.4 using those settings.

There is a great post on these very forums that gives step by step on the 680i.

Cool. Yeah I have a Tuniq Tower installed on the CPU ... so I feel I NEED to OC the CPU haha, just wanna make sure I know what I'm doing I guess.

So ...

I put the 1066 Ram in ... BIOS defaults it to 800Mhz.

I unlink the ram/fsb ... change the FSB to 1333Mhz and the RAM to 1066.
Change the voltages to appropriate levels.

Computer crashes when it gets into windows. Even if I just change the FSB and leave the RAM @ 800 ... same thing happens.

If I leave everything at their default values, system turns on and runs fine.

What am I doing wrong?
