It depends on whether you're thinking of overclocking. If you are, then get an E6600 or E6420, if not, then get an X2 6000. Even not overclocked, the E6600 trades blows with the X2 6000, and if you do overclock it a tad bit, then it'll beat the x2 in most benchmarks. Or if you can wait and see what Barcelona has to offer, then I would go that route since you're probably not going to be upgrading for a while after this.

The 6000+ started as a real bargain, but here in the UK Intel's E6600 has dropped in price and is now selling for a similar price. They are similar in performance, but Intels Core 2 Duo model when overclocked leaves AMD trailing. The AMD on the other hand has very limited overclocking potential. I also believe that the Intel would consumer less power, so that's another positive.

You may want to wait to see what Penryn and Barcelona have to offer, because, if some of the rumors I have heard are true, they both may be major steps forward (maybe not core 2 vs P4 sized step, but still sigifigant). I assume this is a fresh build, in which case speedbird and nightscope give the correct advice. However, if you already have an AM2 MB, go with the 6000+ for sure. Otherwise, its a toss up.
If you are feeling generous, go with AMD and support the underdog. :lol:

If taking the Intel route, personally i'd pickup something very cheap, then when those huge price drops come in july/august upgrade again.
Depends what you are planning on buying and how much you need it though

This could possibly work for AMD too. I'm not sure what their pricing will be like, but huge drops are surely on the way with the Q6600's aggressive future pricing.
