I need to build a NAS as I do music production/recording & digital photography and have a TON of files and I use several different laptops and tower.

I know assembling a NAS is pretty much just like any other computer, but my question is, what hardware should I use? I am on a budget though. Thinking around $600. I'd like to use "Free NAS" as well, just not sure how to do it as I've never used it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If $600 is a hard and fast limit drop to 2TB drives, that saves you $120-150 but you lose 6TB of storage. I prefer 3TB drives for NAS.
