Netbook cooling mod

once, i open my netbook and investigate it because i wonder why this netbook fan is located at the other side of the netbook (the fan is located at left side while the inlet airflow is located at bottom, right side)

so, i opened my netbook, trying to take out the mobo. and what did i see was, the heatsink of the cpu and gpu are just flat (no grills/holes) and thickness about 3-5mm. the size is about less than a quater than the size of the netbook (netbook is 10"). looks like a plate. so different from my father's netbook, HPmini HP 2133, that uses VIA processor.

the fan speed isnt that nice... i dont know the exact speed but even at 100% power, i only feel like about 70~80% of the MSI Notebook MS-1027 Barebone fan.

so because of this, i thought that the fan is only expels the hot fan to outside and my pc can withstand passive cooling. so, i tried to disconnect the fan. with still the mobo is outside of the netbook, i boot it to windows and about 10 mins later, i got bsod.

so the next thing is i want to put extra heatsink (chipset heatsink from old faulty mobo) to this plat (the netbook heatsink). so, i applied gold silicone thermal grease, screw and super glue it to the plat. and i go a problem, the heatsink is still too big (this is the smallest heatsink i have currently). so, i just make a hole big enough to let the heatsink got out easily. for about more than an hour making the hole, i installed back all the parts, except i still let the fan disconnected.

then, i boot, no bsod for 15 mins. i stress out the cpu and gpu at a time and for 15mins, i got 100C! so, my passive cooling netbook system failed. so i just replugged the fan controller and boot the pc.

Temp (tested every about 5 min)
Idle: 65C
CPU max load: 79C
GPU max load: 86C (cpu usage at avg of 70-85%)
both CPU & GPU load: 80C (weird)

what did i get after mod, disappoint. Cuz i only gets bit cooler... the netbook looks ugly at the bottom. i feel annoyed when the heatsink is the 'leg of the netbook', causing disturbs.

pros: with a notebook/netbook/pad cooler, i can get even more cooler netbook.

so, what do you think?

[edit] almost forgot. my spec
Intel Atom N475 (default clock)
Intel GMA 3150 (Sherry 1.3 driver modded. however, feels nothing)
1GB DDR3-1366 (single slot)
Laptop, COBY 10" superportable netbook

(i have trouble to upload the images.. how to upload them?)

You are talking about an atom CPU here. There is not much you can do about it.

They put a lot of thought in the cooling and no matter what you think, the OEM cooling is sufficient. You can't ask too much from an Atom.

what were the temps before you opened the Netbook ?

well, even though i didnt check for it, i do sure is around... almost the same as the currently one, a bit like 2~5C differences

i do this mod actually for making it passively cooled. but if failed, at least i want to have more cooler result.
but, maybe this one failed...

From experience, the cooling components for these Netbooks are very vendor specific. If you are lucky you my find a different cooler that also works for your Netbook.

Do some research with other Netbooks and see what you find, but the chance are, there is not much you can do. Your best best is changing the fan and Heat Sink then buying a very good brand Thermal Paste or Thermal Pad.

I will suggest The Honeywell PCM45F Thermal Pad in this case and You really don't want to be opening a Netbook over and over again to apply Thermal Paste

can say my netbook is rare brand...

thanks for the info!

ah... actually, the thermal pad between the cpu/gpu and heatsink are kinda glued...

anyway, thanks for the advice!
