Hello everyone,

Recently I have been noticing a slowdown in my internet speed. When I reached out to XFinity, they said my modem and router were out-dated. I have the Netgear CM1000 modem and the Netgear AC3200 router. I upgraded to 1gig speed package with Xfinity and I am only getting 290/300 download speed.

After doing some research, I saw the Netgear CM3000 modem was good for Xfinity. So my question is, will this modem get me the speed I am paying for or do I also need to upgrade my router and if so, any recommendations?

Best regards,

Jeff

Hello,

My speed test for Ethernet and WiFi are almost the same with 290/300.

When I spoke to Xfinity, they said my modem and router were out-dated. Could this be true?

As mentioned by cruisetung reset the router. Almost all routers use a hardware nat assist to offload/bypass the cpu chip. There are certain features sometime very minor that require the CPU to see the data. This would mean in addition to doing that feature the CPU chip would now have to do the NAT. It is not uncommon for even very powerful routers to get poor speeds when the CPU chip is doing all the work.

Maybe try to hook your pc directly to the modem. This will quickly shoe if the router is causing the issue. You will likely have to power cycle the modem every time you change what is plugged into it.

Docsis 3.1 is what the ISP uses to get the plans that exceed 1gbit. Both modem should do that. I have not looked in detail between the 2 but newer modems have 2.5g etherent ports.
Mostly the ISP is giving you a excuse because they do not like to support older equipment. The ISP must apply all the firmware even on routers owned by a customer.
