I'm am considering buying the NETGEAR WNCE2001 adapter for my desktop pc to use for gaming and downloading

seeing as the connection would go from the ethernet at the back of my pc to the adapter would this give me a better and faster signal than a usb or pci?

It is just a different option; performance will likely be pretty much the same. Only advantage is that you can use up to 100 meter cable to place it in a better reception location in the room. Still if you can cable to the router that is your BEST option for games.

I recommend going with the NETGEAR WNCE2001 (ethernet bridge) over USB based solutions since USB solutions will eat up CPU cycles to communicate with the chipset in the USB adapter. Also with the ethernet bridge approach, you won't have to install or keep a USB driver up to date. To your PC, it just sees a direct ethernet connection.
