I recently got a new PC with the following specs:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9800X3D
  • Motherboard: ASRock X870 Pro RS WiFi
  • RAM: Trident Z5 Neo 32GB
However, I'm facing an issue with my wired internet connection. The problem is that I keep getting disconnected from the internet, and my network link speed is capped at 100/100 Mbps. When I manually change the speed and duplex settings to 2.5 Gbps, the connection becomes unstable and disconnects frequently, eventually reverting to 100/100 Mbps.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  1. Reinstalled the network drivers (downloaded directly from the motherboard manufacturer’s website).
  2. Adjusted the speed and duplex settings.
  3. Tested the Wi-Fi connection, which works fine and does not have any connectivity issues.
  4. Changed cables
  5. Tried internet through mobile wifi and another system
  6. uninstalled network driver while being offline and installed latest driver from mobo manufacturers website
Despite these efforts, the wired connection problem persists. Any advice or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? This reddit might interest you. It must be the drivers playing havoc. For added measure, make sure you reinstall the latest chipset drivers and then reinstall the latest LAN drivers in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

As mentioned it likely is some bios issue. The posts linked above I suspect are referring to all the issue both intel and realtek had with their 2.5g ethernet ports when they first came out years ago. Intels was so bad they could not fix it completely with just drivers. Technically the only fix was to recall and replace the motherboards....which nobody did. All the newer boards have the newer hardware and new bios so it is unlikely it is that problem. It had similar problems to what you are reporting.

Maybe try the standard things when a port drops to 100mbps. These tend to be bad cables and 2.5g ports are much more sensitive to bad cables. There are massive amounts of fake ethernet cable sold. The most common is the flat cables, all those are fakes and have wires much too small to meet the ethernet standards. You need nothing real special. Cat5e can run 2.5g at shorter distance. You might consider cat6a cable since there is no longer a huge difference in price. the cat6a cables have not actually gotten any cheaper just the other cables have gotten so much more expensive because they both use about the same amount of copper metal which is the main cause of cost increases.
