hey guys, ive got today my 5800x3d which replaces my 3700x on the same system.

full specs:

5800x3d
Gigabyte x570 Aorus Elite @ latest bios (f37d)
4*8gb ram (32gb) @ xms2 3200mhz @ cl16 1T
ASUS 3080TI
Gigabyte 3070 (for mining, not using it yet but it IS installed)
1300W eVGA fully modular PSU 80+ gold
i hope im not forgetting something important

so first, i booted fully stock, things would run but temps (ccd especially) hit 91.5 pretty often. running prime95 was impossible. the pc would freeze.
turned off cpu boost (not pbo, i dont think my mobo has pbo its called something else) - then everything ran nice and cool at about 65c and prime would run too.

undervolted the SoC and VDDC via bios a little, now prime95 runs, but im hitting 90c again.... what gives? im running a 240mm water cooling system, which kept my 3700x stock at a nice 64c at prime95... should i be worried? why is my pc unstable (only at prime to be honest but its fully unnerving me due to the fact this is FULLY STOCK bios settings)

is my bios maybe the root cause? whats going on here?

any help or input would be very appreciated

thanks

hey, its an AIO but it worked perfectly well with 3700x. i never did any OC with it or the new cpu... i always just let it run at default except XMP.
im actually getting nvidia driver errors now too, i dont know if its related but i never had them with the 3700x.

im gonna do a fresh drivers install and if problems persist (crashing while prime95 and gaming) i'll try fresh windows install, and if all else fails i'll try to put a 1version older bios...

im out of ideas with how to fix this using current bios settings tuning

i wrote up, its latest bios f37d.

uh, its called darkflash, not a very well known brand but ive been using these for more than one pc, and they're all at nice sub 70c @ load. even this cpu is at nice 34c at idle so its not the coolers fault. running pump at 100% too. just to be sure

but im having stability issues at stock settings :/ i wouldnt mind temps if everything just runs, but it doesnt - prime instantly crashes and games randomly bluescreen.

im gonna try updating the chipset driver now as mine is from late 2020 and theres a new one from 2022...

also, 91c seems overly exccessive with an aio 240mm radiator, right now im updating my gpu drivers as the bluescreens im getting are gpu related (which is strange because i only replaced the cpu but whatever, at this point i'll try anything reasonanble)

Try those things. However a 240mm AIO is no better than a mid range air cooler, for higher performance AIO cooling you go 280, 360, 420. Im using a 360mm AIO and on 10 mins of Cinebench R23 multi core it still hits 82c and Cinebench isn’t as stressful as Prime95 from what I read.

Blue screens seems more likely a RAM issue than heat, I’d try using 2 dimms for a while and see if that helps.

I wouldn't blame the temp on the crashing since the way the boost algorithm works make it typical for these things to run hot (up to around 90C under full load). Have you ever reset CMOS? It's very important, especially after a CPU change but also after BIOS update.

I also wouldn't blame the AIO unless it's one of those prone to internal contamination creating a blockage to liquid flow. That's why knowing the brand/model might help. And then, it might be mounted wrong, unevenly tightened or bad thermal paste application. One thing to do once you get stability sorted at stock settings is to undervolt using the Curve Optimizer. Even though it doesn't always result in lower, it would be at a lower voltage and higher clock at a given temperature.

im still getting crashes in games, prime works fine now, temps are still 91c at prime95 but around 64c while gaming (CPU temps).

what is curve optimizer? right now im undervolting via bios, and while it seems it fixed prime95, it introduced game crashes

Nonsense, with wraith cooler @ 3700x i had much worse temps than with this AIO.

Also, RAM is perfectly FINE, this kit has been running with my 3700x for years.

3700x 90 watts under load, 5800x3d 130 watts under load.

i see your point, now lets assume temps are all fine, why am i getting either crashes @ prime95 or when undervolting, at games ? (need to test if in stock im not crashing at games, didnt try that yet because for me if system is not prime95 stable its a no go)

Solved the problem.

i tried undervolting in bios but it always messed something up.

found a nifty tool called PBO2 Tuner (NOT the official ryzen master, youtube 5800x3d keeping it cool) that is specially built to undervolt the 5800x3d, once UV to -20 per core (idk, thats what the guide used. up to -30 im guessing mv) now everything stable. temps while gaming under 64c, prime95 under 87, no throttling no stutteering, geez this cpu is a pain in the ass but once its working, its a workhorse for sure

It's only a pain because people persist in thinking it shouldn't run upwards of 90C when AMD says it's designed to...and also think Prime95 is somehow still relevant.

But undervolting with CO is the way to go and is a definite performance improver.
But my man.. I was getting super low scores on benchmark, like almost bottom of the list.... Games were stable but I had usb devices just randomly dis and reconnect when CPU was stressed...
Also, nothing should crash a stable CPU. Not even prime.... That's how I always have certified computers as stable: prime and then 1hr of heavy gaming.

Undervolting from bios wouldn't fix anything... I was about to give up and return the chip.

Now im top 50 of best scores. Everything is stable. No USB disconnects... I ran a game for two hours... Smooth! Now I really love this CPU ..

I don't care about temps if they're in the manufacturer normal range.... True im not used to seeing over 80c but hey I never had 3d v-cache before so I figured it might be normal... But if it ain't stable I can't just let it slide..

....

....
Undervolting from BIOS is one of the best ways to unknowingly degrade performance of Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPU's since it will not be able to boost clocks with the lowered voltage and even goes into a mode called clock stretching where it's not hitting it's unboosted clocks even though it reports it is.

Overclocking, including PBO, does not work from BIOS with 5800X3d so you can't use CO that way. The way you're doing it is the best you can do as I understand.
