I just bought a brand new Acer Nitro N50-640 Desktop PC and I noticed that the PSU has a steady buzz when I plug it in the in computer (the computer is not running, just plugged in). The buzz becomes a slow clicking sound if I disconnect the motherboard from the PSU.

Note: The computer works fine and I've had zero issues with it but I'm concerned about that buzzing sound coming from the PSU when its plugged in and the computer is not running.

Also: I can't hear if the PSU is buzzing or clicking when the computer is running because of fan noise.

Also: The PSU is 500 watts and it only has a 12v rail(I think) and the motherboard cables are one 8 pin(motherboard pwr I think) and one 6 pin(CPU pwr, I think).

Welcome to the forums, newocmer!

You can take a sheet of A4 paper, then roll it into a cylinder, then hold one end to the ear. Using the other end, you probe for the source of the sound.

I would contact Acer's support team and bring them up to speed with the matter, since it's brand new, you should be able to convey to them the noise you're hearing.

Note: The problem wasn't the noise when the computer was running. The problem was the PSU noise when the computer wasn't running but the PSU was plugged in and receiving power.

I'm just asking because I've never heard a PSU buzz before when it was plugged in and the computer was not running. I have to say the biggest worry is unplugging the motherboard from the PSU(PSU is powering nothing now) and hearing the slow click noise from the PSU when its plugged in.

I have a Corsair 650W PSU an its makes zero noise when I plug that PSU in(Corsair PSU is not powering anything) and turn it on.

I guess I'll take the computer back to the store I bought it and see what they say.

One possibility is that your outlet is not properly grounded or the polarity is wrong.

Pre built units will use cheap power supplies that can not compensate.
I tried both a UPS and a wall outlet and both produced the same buzz...
I just purchased an extended warranty so that should cover any mishaps that may occur.

Is your computer still working fine? My Nitro n50 also has the exact same problem
