New Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 not detecting GPU

Hi,

I installed a new Z77 Extreme 4, an i5-3550 CPU, and added some RAM today. I noticed that in the BIOS the PCIe slot shows up as empty and in Speccy my 6870 doesn't show up. I've installed new ATI drivers, updated my BIOS, ran driver sweeper, tried the other PCIe slot, checked the BIOS and set it to PCIe for video, but none of these have worked. I'm going to send a ticked/email thing to Asrock but any help here would be appreciated too.

I have a 600w OCZ PSU and it is connected to the card. The fan of the card is spinning.

When I do there is no display because mt card isn't being properly used by my motherboard.

try reseating it in the x16 slot, if a fail try moving it to the x8 slot.

If it was dead it wouldn't turn on, right?

Also I've reseated it multiple times. I've also placed it into the other slot but that didn't work. it must be some sort of software/compatability problem. I emailed Asrock and hopefully they'll help me out.

Didn't you just say it wasn't turning on? Just fyi: the fan is turned on and controlled by your power supply since you plug it in to your graphics card. If the GPU is dead, the fan would still spin.

It's either the card or the motherboard slot to be honest. Though I doubt Asrock support will help you much. Did you buy the PC parts from the local store? If you did, take your computer to them and let them test the motherboard with different graphics card or the HD 6870 with a different motherboard.

Alright, but I seriously doubt that it has died. It's not that old.

Is everyone all out of ideas?

This is the PC I used before. My old motherboard died a few weeks ago.

I wouldn't say screwed. It's just unlucky that one of your components isn't working.

BTW: how did you diagnose that your old motherboard died?

The PC started and didn't POST. So I tried reseating the RAM, clearing the CMOS, running on a bench, using a diffrent PSU ect.


So is my only option to RMA this mobo for a different brand? This is my second Asrock mobo in a week. The other one was a Z68 and it wasn't compatible with my Ivy cpu.

You're really unlucky.. I personally have Asrock board and it's working like a charm. I really like their UEFI bios as well. I wouldn't blame the brand, as faulty parts happen for any companies.

Before RMA'ing, you should still test another card in your PC - borrow it from a friend, or bring your HD 6870 to his place and check if it works.

I'm currently installing some drivers from the CD the mobo came with and I see "Installing Driver....Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port" I'm hoping this is what I'm looking for.

If anyone still cares, I installed a really old crappy GPU that my brother left home and it worked. So this means my SAPPHIRE HD 6870 is broken. I'm going to try to return it and get a replacement. Wish me luck. But at least it's not the motherboard that's broken so I still have a computer to use in the meantime. Just no BF3 for me for a while ;_;

Glad you figured it out. It's way more common for a card to be bad than a motherboard.

Hi,

Just saw this post and I'm not sure the problem I had was the same however after trying several different combinations of card and monitors I have identified that for some strange reason I get no signal out the the DVI port on any card plugged into the first PCIE 3.0 slot, using DP or HDMI works fine (I have eyfinity setup so I get 2 screens at post) once in windows the DVI comes to life and all is good.

2 Things worked for me

1. Plugging card into PCIE 3 (DVI worked fine) only 8x but it's been proven that no card as yet uses PCIE 3 16x bandwidth anyway.

2. Using DP or HDMI in first PCIE 3.0 Slot and I get 16x.

Really weird thing is if I plug 2 cards in crossfire and connect monitors to the card in first PCIE slot the DVI works fine, this has stayed with me from 1.2 bios all the way to current 2.0, it hasn't bothered me as I found a way around it, but not everyone has 3 monitors and 3 graphics cards on hand to try.

I got an ASUS 7850 2GB and it's working beautifully (after I re-installed the drivers because the ones that came with it were piss poor.) Problem solved.

I'm having this same problem with a Gigabyte Geforce GT640. It doesn't have power connectors on it & I've tried connecting to both PCIe2 & 3. There is no VirtuMVP driver installed. In the UEFI, the PCIe slot shows "empty". I can't even install the drivers because the "Nvidia installer cannot continue: this graphics driver could not find a compatible graphics hardware." I called Asrock about it & they said to test the gpu in another computer & if it worked, I should rma the board. Well, it did work in another computer but I hate to rma the mobo if there's another solution out there. Anyone?
