It's time, folks. I need a new one and, to be honest, I'm out of the loop. I don't have as much time as I did back in the day to dive into crazy amounts of research and I used this very same back then, with great results, so here we go :) My current system is an i7-4790k with a GTX970. I'm still getting good performance on what I play, but I'd like to get with the times.... 😀 I got that build in 2015 when Witcher 3 came out and I remember it being awesome. I'm looking for that same performance type in August 2023 standards, if at all possible.

There's a sale going on 3070s near me and there are only two components I've decided on which is this card (or similar): https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product...i-8-gb-video-card-tuf-rtx3070ti-o8g-v2-gaming
And the case: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/d8WzK8/fractal-design-north-atx-mid-tower-case-fd-c-nor1c-03

I have no horse in the AMD vs Intel race, I'm brand agnostic, as long as the parts fit and the performance is similar... The key is longevity. Budget is relatively flexible, I'm not sure what a realistic maximum is, I'd say 2k, maybe? Willing to go a bit higher if necessary or worth it I'm in Canada. Starting fresh for anything else components wise... I'm lost with the chipsets and the compatibility and all that 😀

Thanks everyone!

i7-13700 or i7-13700K Z690/Z790 motherboard, you could also opt for a B760 motherboard, but the big processors use a lot of power, so Z is better.
Ryzen 7700X and a B650 motherboard, B650E, X670, or X670E would also work.
DDR5 would be the logical choice at this point, and mandatory for a Zen 4 system. DDR5 6000 CL30 or CL32 is about the best bang for the buck right now.

Here is a quick build you can tweak:

What resolution do you game at?

That is a very good point. 1080p 60 is perfectly fine for me. The ocaisional 1440p would be nice, but 4k is not a target nor a priority
The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

I was actually in your position, with a 4770 needing an upgrade a month ago.

A Ryzen 5 7600 and RX 6800 XT on a B650 is fulfilling every need. These ladies and gentlemen came up with an excellent list of suggestions to build a system with.

Your two selections are fine.

Buying new, go for current gen products. The price/performance of intel 13th gen or am5 is likely to be better.
You get similar performance at every price point.
Past that, since you are familiar with intel, I suggest you stick with Intel, there is a learning curve changing environments.

Current ram tech is DDR5, but DDR4 performs equally and components are a bit cheaper.

With your budget in mind, I think a I5-13400 processor with 16 threads would be appropriate.
It is about 2x as strong as your 4790K
Any lga1700 motherboard will work. I would avoid the cheapest H610 chipset motherboards.
You may find that the MATX sized motherboards with 4 expansion slots are cheaper.
We now really do not need 7 expansion slots any more.
FWIW, no longer does I3/i5/i7/i9 designate the number of cores and hyperthreading.
They more or less reflect a processor capability.

Again, you mostly get what you pay for with graphics cards. I would avoid the maximmally overclocked versions.
3070ti is good.
Again, since you are familiar with nvidia, stick with nvidia.

Modern graphics cards can have high power peaks so a strong psu is good.
Do plan to buy a top end psu such as seasonic focus/prime or Corsair RMx unit with a 10 year warranty.
850w is ok, but, the 13400 could drive a much stronger graphics card so 950w would be reasinable.
The psu will only draw the power demanded of it, regardless of the max capability.

Interesting point about the i5/i7... I remember when I bought in 2015 the gap was massive between 7 and 5... From what I'm searching it seems the gap has closed considerably...

I'm looking at B760 boards and trying to figure out what header is required for a Type-C front I/O? In my head this is probably standard at this point, but I'd like confirmation....

I respectfully disagree, with the 6800XT showing slightly better performance overall, but certainly there are areas when the 4070 shows better too.

You might be seeing some AMD favoured titles perhaps?

You can see the benchmarks for both raytracing as well as rasterization here:

RTX mean fps for 1080p:

4070 - 112 fps
6800XT - 91 fps

No RT 1080p mean:

4070 - 138fps
6800XT - 128fps

No, just looking at the Tom’s Hardware performance numbers, which place the 6800 XT slightly above the 4070. Not by much, but given I had a choice of a 4070 for $599 or a 6800 XT for $499, I decided to go 6800 XT. Of course, if you are playing games or using apps that bias toward RT, then Nvidia is the preferred choice…but for 16-17% less $$$…
