My brother is looking to build a new gaming PC this summer for around $500. I am trying to help him and give him some suggestions. After searching online sources, it is amazing how good of a PC he can build for a little more than it cost me to upgrade a CPU, MB and GPU a little over two years ago. He will probably be playing at the 1280x1024 resolution. Therefore, he does not need a super high end rig. I have done the research on both Tom's and Anand as far as benchmarking of the CPU and GPU go, and these appear to be very good for the resolutions and quality settings he will be using.
So here is what we have tentatively decided upon:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Black Edition Processor
Mobo: MSI K9NGM4-F V.2 AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 7025 Micro ATX
Memory: 2GB DDR2-800 (PC6400)
GPU: CHAINTECH GSE96GTC GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
DVD: SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with LightScribe Black PATA Model SH-S202N
PSU: Antec earthwatts EA430 ATX12V v2.0 430W Power Supply - Retail
This build comes to just over $500. What do you all think about this build? Does it appear to be pretty solid?? I have also looked into some of the Intel chips but they are a little too much for the performance gains.
