My choice has come down to these 2 cards.

Gigabyte ATI HD7970 OC Edition 3G [GV-R797OC-3GD] $409.00

Gigabyte GF GTX 670 OC EDITION PCI-E 3.0 2GB [GV-N670OC-2GD] $419.00

They would used on my gaming machine, playing at this stage Dirt, Crysis BF3 and others now that I have a gaming box again.
At the moment resolution would be 1080p, but in the future this could change if and when I buy a dedicated monitor for this box.
My hardware- i5 3570k, asrock extreme 4, 16 gigs gskill ares 1866mhz, corsair 750tx psu.

I had all but decided on the 670, but I had assumed that the 7970's were much more again in price.
Not a fanboy of either, longevity is probably what I'm after from either.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated , read so many reviews that I'm worried jumping either way may.
Cheers in advance and in Australia by the way.

The 670 and 7970 perform basically the same at stock up to 1080p resolution, trading blows depending on the game. The 7970 will OC better and do better at high resolution (and has way more compute power), the 670 gives you CUDA , PhysX, TXAA, FXAA, ADap. Vsync etc and lower power draw. Both are solid buys around the $400

Solution

That would be nice, but over here it is selling for $608.00. A bit to much for what I want to do I think.
As I thought , this is quite a conundrum.

$549, like I said in my first post , I considered 7970's out of reach cost wise till I saw the gigabyte one.

if i think the GIGABYTE'S OC HD 7970 had 3gb on board for eyefinity is good for you,but if you take GIGABYTE'S OC GTX 670 its ok either because its feature like adaptive vsync, fxaa and txaa,3d vision surround, gpu boost.Usually it is from your decision what graphic card that you want to buy and your money to spend the hardware for budjet (sorry if i wrong) :)

Cheers for your help guys.
I've gone for the 670, just so many reviews saying good things.
Heat and power were probably the deciding factor, very hot here so even a couple of degrees can help.
The coil whine was a worry, with the 7970, but I think the 670 will do everything I want.
The last box I built had a 4970, so I should be shocked one way or another.
