Hey team, I am looking to upgrade my old build from end of 2014 (I have upgraded it to Corsair 32GB 3200mhz, 2080 XC Ultra as well as a few noctua fans to replace some of the other fans as well as an NVME (external enclosure for now, saving for new build) and more SSD/HDD drives.
That computer (slightly changed from my original idea thanks to the fam here) has lasted me until now and still works like a boss with 2 monitors (2560x1440 and 5120x1440), plays almost everything really well too, but is struggling to keep up with newer games.
However my biggest issue is that I'm noticing slowdown and delay in responsiveness with my usual tasks like photoshop, aftereffects, some video processing as well as some work things I use. Also I do have a lot of windows open due to work. Sometimes I have both chrome and edge open with dozens of windows on a busy day, plus multiple programs and video chat and so on. So, I think it's time to retire this bad boy to a work PC.
I have prepared a new build and would like some advice. I have ordered a few of the parts already. My budget for the parts is about $3500 but can go up to $4000 if necessary as I can get some on 0% for 6-12 months instead of just buying everything out right. My last computer lasted me 8 years and still going, I'm hoping for some similar results.
But, I am not sold on the:
Motherboard (especially considering it doesn't seem to have the headers needed for Cosmos USB C on the front, but not a deal breaker ~$550 budget)
RAM (it doesn't have to be pretty ~$550 budget)
PSU (I like the flashy one with the built in LCD but it's not a big deal and likely can be replaced ~$550 budget).
In fact I could nix all of the RGB stuff if necessary, as I don't really care about it, I already ordered the CPU cooler with the LCD on it but I can always return it. I'm also pretty torn between getting all noctua fans as usual or getting those 2 3packs for the colors. I have plenty of extra hard drives and I was able to get the 970 EVO Plus NVMe® M.2 SSD 2TB for $139 after rebates thanks to r/buildapc sales post.
So, I'm looking for advice on RAM, PSU, Mobo and Fans set up. My old boy has 9 fans and never let me down so far in cooling my GPU and CPU. GPU idles at 29-31 and never hit above 61 under full load.
As mentioned above, my motherboard budget is up to $550 if it's worth it and PSU and RAM up to around the same each if they're worth it. (Don't see any reason to go 128GB ram yet or really don't know if 4000mhz worth the high prices). Obviously the more I can save the better. I'm not looking to throw money away either.
As far as the video card goes, at the same time I built my PC in 2014, I built one for my little brother, about half the power and half the cost and he's due for an upgrade too. So I got a decent PC for him with a 3080. Will swap out my 2080 for it (will put an older 1080 into the old boy) and give him a prebuilt with a 2080 (he's currently running this with my old 1080)
